David Gornoski is a Christian. But he’s not one of those Christians. Heavily influenced by René Girard’s mimetic theory, he comes at Christianity from the angle of anthropology. Why do humans seem to have an innate need to create scapegoats and monsters? How is that habit overcome? And why in the world is David’s great podcast, A Neighbor’s Choice, also on the old school radio using old school radio styling?
I recorded for over 2 hours with Matt Erickson last night, and we talked off-air for even longer. We’re talking the pitfalls of libertarianism, history and why it can be dangerous to study philosophy without knowing it, metahistory and our current apocalypse, Orthodox Christianity and why he thinks so many people are discovering it right now, and, y’know, other stuff. As is always the case with Matt, it’s a great conversation. Listen.
You’ll notice the episode numbers are a bit wonky. That’s going to continue throughout December. Sorry!

# Your Questions Answered with James Jenneman
Links and Notes: https://www.blackbirdpodcast.com/p/bb55-your-questions-answered-with
I had an interview fall through, so you’re getting a solo episode! I could’ve asked one of my pinch hitter buddies to fill in, but I want to get better at talking into a microphone without someone on the other end. My intrepid editor, Chris at Podsworth Media, cut the episode from about 50 minutes to about 40 just by removing “ums” and awkward pauses, so I have a little work to do. But you can’t grow a muscle if you don’t work it out, right?

# Thinking Integrally with Corey DeVos
https://blackbird.substack.com/p/bb18-thinking-integrally-with-corey-devos
As you know, I’ve been quite taken with the philosophy of Ken Wilber, known as Integral Theory, lately. I interviewed Bryan O’Doherty in Blackbird Ep. 8. Bryan, who is also libertarian, was able to give us a good overview of Integral Theory, along with his political framework of panarchy.
Today I’m happy to introduce you to Corey DeVos. Corey is a leader in the Integral community. He hosts the “Everyone is Right” podcast, and he runs Integral Life, Ken Wilber’s website. This is an educational and insightful conversation. Plus, I promise you won’t hear this many references to a podcast host’s genitals on any other show.
As a reminder, here’s the color code and quadrants we’ll be talking about throughout this episode. (If you’re listening on a podcast app and there’s no image below, click the link above to see it, and subscribe to the Substack while you’re at it.)

# How States Foment Mass Hysteria with Philipp Bagus
Episode Webpage: https://blackbird.substack.com/p/bb17-how-states-foment-hysteria-philipp-bagus
Ever since reading The Crucible in tenth grade, I have always been quite interested in the phenomenon of mass hysteria. I almost started a podcast on the subject, chronicling history’s hysterias. As it turns out, I’m not much of a hystorian (though I do secretly hope someone steals the idea).
When I heard today’s guest, Philipp Bagus, had co-authored a paper on the current mass hysteria surrounding the covid-19 pandemic, I needed to talk to him. I know you’ll enjoy and be enlightened by this brief chat!

A quick word of warning on Binance: In order to comply with IRS regulations and various and sundry state laws, Binance's United States operation is entirely run by Binance dot US. Binance dot com is for non-US customers only.

Bonus Book Recommendation: The Pine Creek Chronicles is a hilarious new series was written by a friend of the show. I wanted to give him a quick shout-out. If you’re want a bit of entertaining fiction
