To our dear small groupers, here is this week's class. Bonnie & I are in the midst of teaching classes each day on how to correctly understand and apply the Scriptures. Thanks for your faithful prayers that uphold us. We heard from a student this week that told us that after all these years of "going to church" he started studying the Bible with us, and has now been born-again. Each of you that help us as we serve to make all this possible, so you are part of this man's coming to Christ. Rejoice with us and pray for many more. Here's our next of the greatest chapter lessons. Praying for you this week as you study and grow with us in the Word! They held the Holy revelation of God’s Word. Most people could not afford a personal copy of God’s Word—but these men were surrounded by mountains of scrolls. They were read, they were discussed, they were copied, and they were stored everywhere around them. What was wrong with all this? They only held God’s Word in their hands – not in their hearts. God was only near in their mouths – and not in their hearts. Yet all that exposure to God ended up only in their head, not in their hearts. They did not choose to let those truths invade and take over their hearts and wills. The spiritual skin of their lives, overexposed to the Light of God’s truth, had developed the deadliest cancer of all – spiritual indifference. They cared not for God. They loved not the Lord. They longed not to know and worship Him. Look at Christ’s words about them. Matthew 15:8 ‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.Lesson Reminders: 1-We need to beware of overfamiliarity with the wonders of Christ (like those “Sacred Triangle” cites). 2-We need to regularly ask God for a fresh dose of Christ’s compassion (Col. 3:12-14) Who were these priests and scribes? Most likely the priests were descendants of Aaron and Zadok and the scribes were descendants of Ezra the scribe. Just to see the character of these men look with me at Ezra 7:10. For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the Law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach statutes and ordinances in Israel. What a wonderful example of the devotion of Ezra to God’s Word in Zacharias” life. But by Christ’s time, this personal devotion in a religious professional was rare. Genuine devotion for the Lord had waned for the most part. The indifferent and Christ neglecting Religious Leaders are such a warning to us today. Think of all the opportunities these religious professionals had to get close to God. They lived in the presence of God. Old Testament Worship centered around the Tabernacle and then the Temple. Losers are Keepers Remember when you went to school as a kid? Out in the playground, you learn a lot of things that stay through life. Here’s one “Finders keepers, losers (what?) weepers”. Right? Well, let’s find out. Turn to Luke 9.23. What does Jesus say? He says that what we lose for Him we get to keep forever. What we find and keep for ourselves we lose forever. So in reality Losers are Keepers and Keepers are the Weepers! One of the best illustrations of that is in the tale of two men – one who lost and gained and one who gained and lost it all. Sometimes I am amazed at some of the unexpected opportunities I had growing up. Let me share just one. I was about 9 years old. My family was caring for an 88-year-old saint from our church named Dora Kaiser. Now Mrs. Kaiser was quite adventurous but also very weak. She always wanted to go with us but usually had to find a place to sit down soon after she got anywhere. My dad heard that a famous exhibit was coming to the Museum of Detroit and wanted us to go. I wasn’t sure what we were going to see but it was exciting all the same. After the 90-minute ride we rolled up to the curb in downtown Detroit. Soon we saw that there was a line half a block long waiting to get in. So I was assigned to take Mrs. Kaiser to find a comfortable bench inside where we were to sit and wait. Turning we saw people coming out a door just in front of where we parked by the curb. So being obedient I guided my elderly friend through the crowd saying excuse me as I went in search of a soft seat for her to rest while we waited. Within moments of entering the building, I was astounded as we began to walk by glass cases filled with gold objects. More gold than either of us had seen in the 97 years we had lived between us. Mrs. Kaiser never found a bench. In fact, we never stopped looking in amazement at row after row of displays. Finally, after half an hour, Mrs. Kaiser stood with me at a large square box of stone with a glass top. Looking down I found myself looking into the serene face of a three thousand years old -- teenager. Here was the teen that died mysteriously, 30 centuries ago, yet most of the civilized world today recognizes and is familiar with his face. I was overwhelmed at the warmth of the gold, the sparkling beauty of the gems that make up the final resting place of the boy king. The golden mask with its exquisite beauty has an almost spiritual quality to it. I noticed that each person who came to stand by me reacted the same way – with quiet awe and wonder. I was standing next to the earthly remains of the man who seems to sum up all that was the best of one of the greatest of all the Ancient World’s Civilizations. LEAD Me: so I Do Your Will with my life God’s Pathway to Always Pleasing Him with My Life 1. FOCUS Me: on Who You are as God: v.9 In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. • God wants me to constantly remind myself of just Who it is I am talking to. • John 1:1-3 (Creator), • John 5:28 (Judge); • Col. 1:15-16 (Sustainer); • Hebrews 1:3 (Exact Representation of God), who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, • Hebrews 11:3 (Framed the Universe with a word!). • This One holds in His Hand my life’s breath (Daniel 5:23). • He has told me that life eternal is when I KNOW Him (John 17:3). 2. CONTROL Me: because You have the Plan for my life. v. 10a Your kingdom come. • God wants to rule over every dimension of my life; and for me to surrender to that rule. • I am to seek out His rule each day, FIRST of all (Matthew 6:33). • Matthew 7:21-27 the saved are those who are not just saying they want God’s control, but are submitting to it. • In Mark 10:17-27 the Rich Young Ruler learned that he had to face his own sin, decide to follow Christ or turn his own way. 3. LEAD Me: so I Do Your Will with my life. v. 10b Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. • God wants me to be like Christ. • We are most Christ-like when we have the same attitude Jesus had while on Earth. • Jesus is seen over and over again declaring that He wanted to follow God’s will (John 4:34; 5:30; 6:38-40; 7:17; 9:31; Hebrews 10:5-7). • In John 1:13 we were saved by the will of God that transfers us from the kingdom of our own way to His way; in John 4:34 we live by God’s will just like we eat to live so we live to do His will; in John 5:30 we actively seek God’s control of our lives; in John 6:38 we exchange our own desires for God’s just as Jesus declared that He did; in John 7:17 we embraced His control of our lives when we sought His salvation; and in John 8:28 we avoid all self-prompted activities. • Christ bought me I Corinthians 6:19-20 • We are to present our bodies back to Him Romans 12:1-2 BAR-2011-04 - Lead Me So I Do Your Will In My Life (110529PM) Join the LAND OF THE BOOK channel to get access to weekly video releases over the next year totaling 50+ EXCLUSIVE VIDEOS that feature weekly in-depth Bible Study lessons with John & Bonnie.
