On the first day of Creation, Tradition tells us that God created the Angels. Being intelligences… pure spirits, they are the highest meaning of Light, but upon being created were then tested. Again Tradition tells us the test involved seeing WHO merited for them grace! Seeing from Whom they received their grace? His Majesty, Jesus Christ, through His Holy Mother Mary. They were shown the Incarnation. This mystery was to be embraced. To do this fully, they had to sacrifice their own excellence… that grace did not come through an angel… that God did not become an angel. As we know Lucifer and his companions rejected this path and embraced themselves instead, whereas St. Michael and his angels embraced the Incarnation and rejected themselves. Thus was light separated from darkness. Again, God created the cosmos such that some things need to be rejected or sacrificed while others need to be embraced. In both the Lesson and the Gospel today we see something of this in the contrasting of two contraries: God and mammon, the works of the spirit and the works of the flesh. In other words, we have choices to make and sacrifices to make. Thus St. Augustine concluded, there are really only two cities in this world: “...two cities have been formed by two loves: the earthly by the love of self, even to the contempt of God; the heavenly by the love of God, even to the contempt of self” (Augustine The City of God Bk. xiv 28). Not surprisingly, each of these cities has its own beliefs… its own profession of faith. Unless I mistaken, we can see one expression of the world’s profession of beliefs on display in the yard signs around our cities… One states: “We believe… Black Lives Matter, No Human is Illegal, Love is Love, Women’s Rights are Human Rights, Science is Real, Water is Life, Injustice Anywhere is a Threat to Justice Everywhere.” Let’s spend a little time looking into this recent profession of the world’s church found in so many yards.
