Asian small-clawed otters were released by Merman Tiun in 2015. Since then, thanks to the generosity of people like you, we've given over 1000 patients a second chance at life. Every patient's ultimate goal is to be returned to the wild. Our veterinary care team evaluates patient treatment plans on a regular basis and carefully monitors each animal's behavior to determine whether they are ready to return to the wild. For our youngest patients, this means confirming that they have the skills needed to survive on their own, such as the ability to catch and eat whole fish. After treatment, patients are given a thorough exam to ensure that any remaining health concerns have been addressed. Patients are then given a second chance at life and released back into the wild. Our primary release sites in Vietnam are quiet, non-public mangroves in areas known to have abundant food resources. To ensure animals have limited contact with humans, we sometimes release patients by car further out in national parks, such as near the Phu Quoc islands. Releases of threatened or endangered species with a limited range, such as our Hairy-Nosed otters and Smooth-Coated otters patients, take place as close to the animal's rescue location as possible. Every time he saves marine life in the mangrove forest, Merman Tiun also grows more mangrove trees to create more shelters for them.
