This is a bit touching to be honest…
This is a tradition at Sparta’s academy. At the end of the season the academy players form a ‘walk of gratitude’ for players and staff who will not be returning for the next season. For the players, they have, unfortunately, been let go which is a very sad moment for them and their teammates. For the staff members, they typically will move on to different positions at other organizations.

This one threw for a second when I first saw it. At first glance it appears to be red against yellow, but its not. It’s 6 players on the perimeter of the grid with a central player along with three defenders in the middle. If a defender wins the ball he changes places with the player who lost possession.
The grid is approximately 20 yds long by 12 yds wide. There are two ‘end players’ and two players each on each side of the grid. The skill is high in this clip and the decision making is excellent but then again, what do you expect from La Masia. What I like about this clip is the movement off the ball. When the ball moves, just about every player off the ball moves to either 1) support the play, 2) open up passing lanes or 3) defensively, pressure the ball.
What I especially like is the movement of the 3 defensive players. They move quickly and, just as importantly, together in the attempt to shut down the play. The first defender (closest to the ball) quickly puts pressure on the ball while the two supporting defenders play a little deeper, off his right and left shoulder, to try to eliminate passes to the central player or through the middle of the grid (penetrating pass). This organized defending puts forces the attacking players to focus, make correct decisions and raises the overall quality of the exercise.

Some fantastic, clean, technical work done here at one of the world’s best youth academies.
The goal keeper moves forward, from the goal line, over four obstacles and makes a save. He then moves rapidly to the left over 3 obstacles and makes a save. Not shown here: the goalkeeper would then move rapidly to the right over the 3 obstacles and make a save. He would then move again to the middle and make a final save.
This is a great exercise and what I like most about it is, first, the quickness of his feet. It is the goalkeepers feet that gets him where he needs to be to make most saves.
Second, it is the absolute confidence of his handling of the ball: clean and secure. Outstanding, world-
class training.

I shot this on my most recent visit to the FC Bayern Campus. It is a good technical exercise that addresses passing, receiving, finishing and also reinforces playing the ball back, switching the play and playing the ball wide. Penetrating runs and passes are also part of the exercise. Some decision making is involved also.
The exercise starts in the middle with a square pass. The receiver turns with the ball and plays to the wide player, who then returns it. The central player turns again and plays to the other central player who turns and passes to the opposite wide player. The type of pass that is made here depends on the movement of wide player. If the wide player shows for the central player the pass is played to feet and the wide player turns and dribbles past his mannequin. If the wide player initiates a penetrating run then a through ball is played. Playing a give and go is also an option here. Once this pass is played the weak side wide player makes a strong run towards the small goal closest to him. The final pass is a driven ball to the feet of the runner who attempts to finish, one touch if possible.

This is actually the ‘escola’ (school) so not the actual Benfica u13 academy team but a level just below. These players are being considered for the academy. I shot this on my last visit to Benfica’s academy.
There is a lot to love about this clip. First, there are some QUALITY pk’s taken here with excellent technique and some great saves. Notice that after the 5th pk the trainer moved the ball farther from goal to challenge the players more.
What I like the most, though, about this clip is the pure joy, enthusiasm and
happiness from all of these players. This is what training should be like all the time for young players. At Manchester United, another top academy, as part of their academy philosophy, believes that if a young player is not enjoying themselves 100% of the time they will never realize their full potential. This is a great example of young players loving every minute of what they are doing. The love and support for both goalkeepers, when they made important saves, is also pretty great.

I love this one. Something different from Lokomitiv Moscow in Russia that the players really
seemed to love.
4 teams compete against each other to knock the cone off the box to win. At the trainers signal, the player at the front of each line dribbles forward to play a rebounding pass off the box. When the player receives the ball back he turns quickly and dribbles back to the starting point and stops the ball dead with the sole of the foot. The next player in line immediately runs up and takes a shot in an attempt to knock the cone off the box to win the game.
