Multiplication and division are inverse operations. They undo each other. We can use multiplication to determine if our estimate of a partial quotient is too high or too low. We multiply our estimate by the divisor, and if the product is greater than the dividend, our estimate is too high. We try multiplying the divisor by one less to adjust the quotient. We can do multiplication on scratch paper to help. If the difference is greater than or equal to the divisor, our estimate is too low and we could have fit one more divisor amount into the dividend. Remember we can check our division with multiplication and addition by multiplying the (quotient X divisor) + remainder = dividend. We do a step-by-step long division problem. We can relate angles and fractional parts of a circle by using a fraction piece to draw/trace an angle, then turning the piece to keep drawing angles until we make a circle. We can do this with any size fraction circle piece. The center-point of the circle is the vertex of each angle. The straight sides of each angle will be rays. The vertex of each angle will be the center-point of the circle. We can relate the numbers on a clock as 1/12 equal size parts of a circle. We can relate fractions and angles to the hands of a clock. We can think of the hands as rays of an angle. Clock hands turn clockwise and if we go in the opposite direction, it is counterclockwise. Each 5-minute mark on an analog clock represents 1/12 turn going clockwise. We see how 15 minutes is equal to 1/4 of an hour, 30 minutes is equal to 1/2 of an hour, 45 minutes is equal to 3/4 of an hour, and 60 minutes is equal to 1 full hour. Any 15 minutes is 1/4 of an hour. Any 30 minutes is 1/2 of an hour. Any 45 minutes is 3/4 of an hour. We can tell what fraction of an hour has passed on an analog clock, starting at any minute. We can tell what fraction of a circle a shaded angle represents by thinking of a clock face. The position of the angle does not affect the size of the angle. We use higher order thinking skills to find the fraction of an hour for 10 minutes, 20 minutes, and 40 minutes.
