Finally managed to get a complete take of this ballad, a nice song written for a lovely lady. If I upload the outtakes, you'll see what a battle it was to get here. It's pretty.... difficult, to be completely honest, to do this anymore, and not just because of how fast the neurological disease is spreading in its end stages. I only ever made these so my children would have something to see of me when they grow up, but that won't happen now - scum judge - and if I had the time left to write an autobiography, it would be called "What's The Bloody Point" (Kenneth Williams fans will get the reference). Anyway, I figure I owe it to the songs, if not myself anymore, to get some of them down, and I do have good feelings of this one. Annoyingly, the outtake [video 1163] has a far better vocal but out-of-tune guitar. The 8-minute harmonica solo on that version shot my throat out for this one. Ahh, excuses, excuses. Another long-forgotten number that has recently been unearthed. I wrote this in 1989, and it was in my live set up until around May 2000 I guess, shortly before I quit playing live. Might have contributed to it, actually. I remember playing it one night, some club, and suddenly having a mental block. Normally any time I lost the way with a song, it was no problem, I would just insert new lyrics. This time - nothing came. It was the first time in 18 stage years I ever dried. I think I took it as a sign. I was coming up to 40, maybe Lyriczheimer's was setting in. I recall going back to my seat and my companion (hi Judy - if you see this, I would love to have those photos and videos you took of the radio shows I did. Oh, and - sorry. It's all in the books!), my companion saying, "Uhhh.... maybe try some different songs?" I suddenly had a vision of Tony Hancock - never changed his stage act in 30 years. I sat at home for a few months, released my first book, then the second. Then I thought, "heck this," or a similar phrase, and got back out there. I left this one at home though. Interestingly, for a first-time-in-23-years, most of the lyrics came back here, once I got going. It's all in those memory corridors somewhere. I have no idea why this is called 'Of'. I called it that when I wrote it, immediately forgot why. It's a lousy title, for a song that is about the recession-drenched, greed-is-good, benefit-cutting, hospital-closing late Thatcher era. Hmm, times don't change much, do they? Only the date. After this version in the video, I tried a few more run throughs, but they never came off. It's a lot of words, in a short time, for a man with Neurological Wasting Disease to get out of his mouth.
