Made a solo trip for Alligator Gar around the middle of October, most of the day went pretty poorly, but on my way to the ramp i saw a 5 foot gar roll in a spot on the back side of a turn in the river, after not seeing much all day i put out three rods and ended up getting three runs in an hour or two. the first two runs were sneaky gar who managed to steal my cut common carp slices.
The third run took off at an alarming rate i managed to do everything right and got her hooked up while filming with one hand and fighting the fish with the other hand. She ended up being way bigger than i thought coming in at 6 foot 8 inches and around 38 inches making her around 160-170 pounds.
She was hooked in the corner of the mouth and was released unharmed after a few pics, she was extremely happy to be back in her river.
The whole trip was just a reminder to make the best of the situation no matter what, and to stick to the things you are passionate about despite the hardships.

As always I'm taking my viewers on the adventure today we are doing a weird fishing challenge, i was fishing a spot and kept seeing some really small gar so i decided i would try and catch the smallest gar possible and show you guys. Why? Because all gar are cool no matter how big they are and allot of people treat the small gar with disrespect and are upset when they catch them, not me though :)
Hope you guys enjoy the video thanks so much for watching.

Fishing a remote river in the heart of Texas with The Fish Whisperer tagging and releasing the most vilified and misunderstood fish species in the United States.
Somewhere along the way this fish species received a terrible rap sheet it didn't deserve, these fish have been native for the last 147 million years and have shepherded the water ways of the Unites States perfectly that entire time giving us the amazing fisheries we have today. They live to be over 90 years old they are beneficial to the ecosystems and control invasive cichlid and carp species.
Their function in the ecosystems is the exact same as a shark or a dolphin, top level predator's are the most important part of the ecosystems they have to be protected and allowed to play their most important roles or the ecosystems they steward will fall apart.
That is what an indicator species is.
These fish are susceptible to droughts, there was a 12 year period of no spawn on the trinity river in Texas, currently much of south Texas is drying many of this species will pass if we don't get rain soon.
Texas Parks And Wildlife believes over 100,000 anglers fish for gar in Texas alone, these fish are hunted wherever they are and killed for a number of reasons, bow tournaments, jug lines, recreational and catch and release anglers alike using too big of hooks, and just a state away thousands of miles of gill nets threaten this species continued viability as one of the leading top level aquatic species of the southern united states.
Id like to change that thats what this page is about its about recognizing the importance and and shear awe of how amazing our natural world, how infinitively connected everything is and awakening others to it. So we may be able to protect the very ecosystems and waterways that sustains our own existence before its too late.
The message is simple: love and conserves our wildlife. - Steve Irwin
