US Greco-Roman National Team Leadership and Character Development show Episode #12
This episode we discuss developing your manly philosophy.
The 4 C’s of becoming a better man.
In this episode Rick and I start the conversation by discussing the pros and cons of social media. Is it worth it?
Does social media help you connect and build better relationships offline.
Next we talk about books we have been reading
Who hasn't looked up to another man and been envious of what you believe he has that makes him so manly?
I lost my Grandfather, when I was young at 21, after my son was born.
My grandfather was the man I most wanted to be like when I was young. He was the man I wanted my son James to get to know.
I'm sure these great men have the same struggles, insecurities, flaws and weaknesses that we all do. What all great men have in common is a purpose. Do you have purpose? What is your purpose.
Are we doing enough to be or become the man that we are capable of being? Probably not I think we can always do better, do more live harder. The real question is do we work to get better at becoming the man we want to be?
My personal philosophy or ethos is simply: Be bold, courageous and take action.
Becoming the man you want to be is not about ease, its struggle, failure and pain. If you want to be a man of action, someone who lives their life bold and courageously then follow the 4 C's
4 C's of becoming a better man

Focus is on what we can control, and attitude is the first thing and everything.
Humility and Gratitude are keys to being a dynastical leader.
Focus on the blessing you have, and take stock in how many people have contributed to where you are today.
Being a genuine authentic and resilient focus on building your C.H.A.R.A.C.T.E.R.
Dec 1941 WW2
16 Million young men sacrificed their lives
They had a mission --- DEFEATING EVIL. These same men had mission when they returned home --- Provide and protect for their families.
I exist therefore I serve VS men today I exist therefore I deserve
The enemy today is not the axis of evil, but rather a purpose void, young man needs a mission. Like leading a team
Being served created a sense of entitlement
Serving others creates a sense of gratitude
Young men need
Purpose and postponed gratification,
This is tougher in the amazon consumer world we live in today, where I can order something and have it delivered to my doorstep.
Victor Frankl stayed alive in concentration camp by developing a purpose and helping others develop a sense of purpose.
Part of Frankl purpose was to suffer well.
You cannot take away; the way I respond to the way you treat me. The last of one’s freedom is the freedom to choose one’s attitude in any given circumstance.
We get to choose are attitude
Joy vs. Sorrow
Strength vs. Weakness
Hope vs. despair

Pastor Mark Driscoll joins US Greco-Roman National team to share a message for athletes and elite performers.
Mark Has been my pastor, friend and mentor for years. I was fortunate that Mark made time to share a message with the Greco-Roman National team on May 6, 2020 during the coronavirus stay home.
Mark Asks who is at the center of your life?
This coronavirus shutdown has really put us in a tailspin. The world shutdown, we can’t train, plan, prepare. The Olympic Games are postponed for an entire year. Now all we want to do is figure out when we can get back to training and preparation for the new date of the Olympics.
What kind of an individual will you be when your athletic career is over, whether you accomplished your goals or not?
As humans we were not created to be the center of the universe, and your identity should never be tied to your performance. If your identity is tied to performance and you are the center there are only two options. If you win you are arrogant and lonely, and if you lose you are depressed, suicidal, and self-destructive.
One day your wrestling career will be over, and you need to prepare for the future. Ask yourself what kind of a human being will you be when you are finished competing whether you achieved your goals or not? You don’t want to be a man who won on the mats but lost in life.
As elite athletes you have a good understanding of what it takes to succeed at the highest level. You understand the level of commitment and sacrifices it takes, to train and prepare to win at the highest level. You feel the pressure to perform and win and at times that pressure can be too much if you are at the center of your life.
