Gymnast Kayla DiCello made history by bringing home the gold medal in the women’s all-around at the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, the first time the United States has won in the category in over 10 years.
What happened: DiCello won the women’s all-around category at the 2023 Pan American Games on Oct. 23 with a total of 54.699 points. Flavia Saraiva of Brazil won the silver medal with a score of 54.565, while fellow American gymnast Jordan Chiles bagged the bronze medal with a final score of 53.999.
Speaking to Olympics following the win, DiCello noted that she felt “really good” and “happy” with the result, noting that the win was her “first gold medal as an all-around champion.”
Making history: DiCello’s victory in the women’s all-around category marked the first time the U.S. won in the discipline in 12 years after Bridgette Caquatto bagged the top medal during the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.
What's next: The American gymnast is now reportedly setting her eyes on the 2024 Paris Olympics. To qualify, she would first have to compete for one of the four remaining spots on the U.S. Olympics team, for which the trial is set for June.
In a post on X in April, DiCello announced that she would be taking a gap year from the University of Florida in 2024 to pursue her Olympic dream. She is planning to return to the university’s arena, the Stephen C. O'Connell Center, also known as the O’Dome, in 2025.

UN Urges Funding Amid Health Crisis for Over Four Million Displaced by Sudan Conflict.
The United Nations issued an urgent plea on Tuesday for increased funding to address a growing health crisis affecting over four million Sudanese individuals who have been forcibly displaced due to the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
The UN’s call comes as health conditions deteriorate in refugee camps, border entry points, and transit centres within Sudan and neighbouring countries.
The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is deeply worried about health conditions in Sudan’s refugee camps, stressing the need for immediate action. Resources are stretched thin, especially in White Nile state, where essential supplies are lacking and health services are strained.
Displaced families, dealing with food and medicine shortages, face rising malnutrition and disease outbreaks. Tragically, over 300 deaths, mostly children under five, have occurred due to measles and malnutrition between May and July. Without timely funding, this toll could rise further.
Shortages of healthcare staff and attacks on medical workers have impacted care quality. White Nile’s analysis shows a startling ratio of 70 patients per clinician per day, well above recommendations. Disrupted supply chains worsen medicine scarcity.
Cholera and malaria risks escalate due to rains and inadequate sanitation. Neighbouring nations are also grappling with similar healthcare challenges. In South Sudan, insufficient funding led to 57 child deaths, with 15 in the past week. Chad’s medical response is strained.
UNHCR and partners are scaling up efforts, deploying staff, distributing medical kits, and increasing vaccinations. Relocation aims to prevent overcrowding. However, immediate donor support is vital.
Over four million Sudanese are displaced within Sudan and neighbouring nations. Funds are urgently needed; only 29 Percent of the required $566 million for the Regional Refugee Response Plan (RRRP) has been received. The inter-agency response in Sudan is only 24 Percent funded.

Sunday’s round of events at the European Games brought successes for Polish fencers, as Julia Walczyk-Klimaszyk picked up the country’s ninth gold, while sabre fencer Krzysztof Kaczkowski took silve
Walczyk-Klimaszyk took advantage of the weaker line-up, as the excellent Italians, who won all the medals of the European Championships in Plovdiv a week ago, as well as top-ranked French and German competitors, did not start in the capital of Małopolska. In the final, she confidently beat Hungarian Flora Pasztor 15:11, achieving the biggest success of her career.
“This is the European Games, it’s not just any event. Everyone comes to win,” Walczyk-Klimaszyk stressed after the competition.
The three-day European Athletics Team Championships came to an end at the Silesian Stadium in Chorzów. The championships was included in the rostrum of the European Games, and the winners of separated events got their medals as well. The Poles, defending their title, lost to Italy and third place went to Germany.
On the final day, individual medals were won by: silver - the 4x400m mixed relay team consisting of: Maks Szwed, Anna Kiełbasińska, Igor Bogaczyński and Natalia Kaczmarek, and Albert Komański in the 200m run, while Norbert Kobielski won bronze in the high jump.
“Once again we showed that we are a very important force in Europe. We won the DME silver medal after a really good competition,” assessed Polish Athletic Association vice-president Tomasz Majewski.
Following Sunday’s action, Poland is fifth in the medal table with nine gold, seven silver and seven bronze. Spain leads (17-9-10), ahead of Italy (15-17-21) and Ukraine (11-7-4).

Let the Pan American Games begin! Team Canada arrives in style at Santiago 2023 Opening Ceremony.
Team Canada has officially arrived at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.
Many of the 470 athletes who make up Team Canada marched into Estadio Nacional on Friday night, along with thousands of competitors from 40 other nations, for the incredible Opening Ceremony that kicked off the 19th Pan Am Games.
Before that, though, the culture and heritage of the host nation, Chile, was given the spotlight. There was a celebration of Chilean birds and a showcase of regional dances and music. The country was shown literally coming together as large modules were moved to form a stage in the shape of Chile, from the Atacama Desert in the north to Patagonia in the south.
Then it was time for the athletes to take centre stage in the Parade of Nations.
First into the stadium was Argentina, given the place of honour as the host of the first ever Pan Am Games in 1951.
Beach volleyball partners Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson proudly led the way for Team Canada, after being announced as the flag bearers earlier in the day. Wearing the widest grins, they held the maple leaf high as their teammates followed looking amazing in their lululemon kit.
Just look at all those happy and excited Canadian athletes! On Saturday things will turn more serious as many of them embark on their competitions. While some are seeking medals, others are additionally seeking to secure Olympic qualification for Paris 2024.
Closing out the parade to a rousing cheer from the home crowd was Chile, who are hosting the Pan Am Games for the very first time.
After the Olympic and Pan Am flags were raised and the oaths were taken, the party resumed with a fantastic display of Chilean iconography.
And then it was time for the Pan American torch, or in this cases, torches, to arrive. Three torches had been crossing the expanse of the country in the leadup to the Games, but they were reunited into one flame just before entering the stadium.
The final torchbearer was Lucy Lopez, who won high jump silver at the inaugural Pan Am Games in 1951. Assisted by Olympic tennis champions Fernando Gonzalez and Nicolas Massu, she lit the cauldron that will burn for the next 16 days.
