Before embarking on his illustrious ice skating career, Hawley served in the United States Army. He later became a champion in the sport of figure skating, achieving such greatness that a Cigarette Card was created in his honor. However, tragedy struck in 1874 on a Wednesday morning when Hawley experienced a devastating incident that resulted in the loss of his right leg, ultimately ending his career. Following this, Hawley retired to a secluded cabin overlooking Barrow Lagoon. On August 18th, 1888, Felix Hawley passed away and was laid to rest not far from his home. Unfortunately, his grave was later desecrated, with the words "NO ICE IN HELL" painted on the tombstone.
