Lake Barrine was formed over 17,000 years ago when a large volcano erupted, leaving a crater that over time filled up with water to create a lake. The crater or maar was formed as a result of a series of volcanic explosions. These explosions were caused by the hot molten rock coming into contact with groundwater. This caused a build-up of steam, gases and pressure which blasted the central core from the volcano. This massive explosion left a huge crater, which filled with rainwater to create Lake Barrine. Local Aboriginals called the lake Barany.

This weekend the inaugural Targa Great Barrier Reef tarmac rally was held in Tropical North Queensland. I went to one of the legs of the race and captured heaps of footage. Following that I went to the town muster to check out the $20 millions worth of machinery on display.
Targa Origin
The current Targa events organized around the world can all trace their lineage to the original Targa – Targa Floria. Whereas todays Targa’s are rally’s, with competitive stages held on closed public roads, the original Targa events – Targa Florio and the Mille Miglia, were open road races with spectators leaning out their windows, or standing in the streets watching the competitors race by!
Targa Florio was first run in 1906 and was the brainchild of Vincenzo Florio, a Palermo businessman, who having established the Coppa Florio in 1900, was looking for a true test of a rather recent mechanical marvel: the car. Targa is Italian for ‘plate’ – possibly referencing a license plate which was often illegally fixed to the first competing Targa Florio race cars in the days leading up to the race, or in commemoration of the first trophy awarded which was a rectangular bronze plate, made by Ren Lalique famous for his glass radiator mascots. This trophy ‘targa’ carried a bas-relief rendering of a racing car against a Sicilian background, with the sky filled in with blue enamel. Targa Florio literally started on the streets of Sicily, near Palermo.

Crawford's Lookout is an easy pull-off from Palmerston Hwy, just near the Namu Tropical Skywalk. There is a narrow spectacular view to the North Johnstone River. On the 20 March 2006, Severe Tropical Cyclone Larry at Category 5 struck the coast at Innisfail Far North Queensland Australia. TC Larry travelled up this valley and defoliated the bushland. Over a few years it returned to its natural beauty.
South Johnstone Mill was built during the First World War and began crushing sugar cane in October 1916. Its opening had been delayed due to material shortages during the wartime period.
