Mirage is an action-adventure stealth game that is meant to be a return to older Assassin's Creed titles. It is intended to be more linear and story-driven, and to contain fewer role-playing elements than the recent installments in the series. The game is set primarily in Baghdad, which is divided into four districts, but also includes the Alamut Fortress in modern-day Iran. With Mirage, the assassination missions from Assassin's Creed Unity and Assassin's Creed Syndicate also return, in which players must explore the environment to find different ways to reach and eliminate their targets.[5] The game includes an educational database on the history of Baghdad with articles that are unlocked gradually throughout the game. These cover the historical background and Islamic art of the Abbasid period.[6]

Similarly to previous Assassin protagonists, the main character Basim has a large arsenal of weapons and tools, including the signature hidden Assassin blade, smoke bombs, throwing knives, and poison arrows. Both weapons and tools can be upgraded through a skill tree that allows for different effects. Basim also has access to Eagle Vision and a feathered companion named Enkidu (after a figure from Mesopotamian mythology), an eagle that he can use to scout nearby areas. Unlike previous Assassin's Creed games, which also featured bird companions, enemy archers can spot Enkidu and shoot him.

Ubisoft announced that they will be releasing an exclusive mission titled The Forty Thieves for players who pre-order the game.
