Paul Murphy - 'Where Does The Sun Go To At Night?' - co-written with Emily M. [Take 5, fingerpicked]
Adapted from a poem by my amazingly talented daughter. I was honoured to be allowed to contribute a few ideas - none of them as good as hers [there is a video of us working], and then, as is my wont, I came up with a tune. A day on, all I could remember was title and the ethos, so I took the liberty of adding some more lines of my own, and this is that version.
Presented here is Take 5, and is a coda to the session. As these things go, it came out possibly the best take, being somewhat 'loose', and playing it more in my coffee-house days style, finger-pickin' an' walkin' (as a sidebar, to anyone starting out - well, who starts out on guitar any more? They start out on computer games these days - but the reason I started the walkin-talkin-blues was, it was easier to drum up coins in the hat, or the jar. If you're stock still at the front, the audience have pack safety. You walk up to and around them, they tend to 'willingly donate' because you are drawing the attention of the room onto them. Free tip!).
By the way, there is a recital of the original, just-finished original version by Emily on my Patreon, which beats the pants off of mine. And she is 9! Mozart - pass that baton, will you?

T'was early 'pon a bright Sunday morn, and in a house not far away, thoughts were doubtless turning to early morning nookie. But a young minstrel had other ideas, and he thoughteth to himself, 'If I'M not getting any, neither is anybody else.' And lo, he didst take his instrument of musicality, and launcheth into a stirring rendition of his 1996 anthem of the protest, 'Bitter Realities'. And yea, his neighb's were most disappointed, as parts headed South from North with rapidity, and other parts didst dry up like the Gobi before the first verse was finished.
"Shutteth the frick up!" they didst request, in a tone most deep. But the handsome minstrel took their comments to be a cunningly-disguised plea for him to strummeth even harder, the only thing that was getting harder by this point. And lo, he didst lapse into his long-cobwebbed punk voice for the last 2 verses, for yea and verily, who needs a tune when thou hast the truth.
Being a kindly soul, after he hath finishedeth his ode to social injustice, the minstrel didst playeth a snippet of a slow version, for he kneweth the value of 'afterglow'. But his neighbs were offly-ticked, and the fellow didst say, "Frick it, I may as well get up and wash the bleedin' car!" And he stompeth down the stairs at many stides, hitting it with a cup of tea to keep it down as he did so. And his lady was sore distressed, the only thing that was sore this fine morning, and made a mental note to fart thru' the minstrel's letter box every five minutes the next time his asthma was playing up.
Meanwhile, the minstrel didst put his instrument away, just like his neighb had been forced to, and at the sound of coital interruption, he didst roll 'pun the floor weeing himself, for yea and verily, he was a mischevous so-and-so on the quiet. Not that he was ever quiet.
Moral: If music be the food of love, some were on a diet this fine morn.

Hello, thank you for viewing this video. This is - oh my stars, was this hard to get through. The first time out, the camera didn't record. No sooner had I started than aeroplanes started swooping over heard. The motorcycles came by. I restarted - and inadvertantly lowered the volume recording level. So this is - 'ramshackle', one might politely say. But - the message is important.
This is a new song [although recited, that is because I was too weak today to try to get a guitar on], and this recording is literally half an hour after it poured out of my head, as you hear it here. If i get back to it, I may edit it (yeah, I know - usually when I 'edit' a new song, it gets longer).
I was working on my will-he-make-it-or-won't-he new lyric anthology, "Compromise Not Pictured", and bam, this appeared out of nowhere. Well, I say nowhere, certain things have been festering away for the last few days, as you may tell from the endpiece backstory. If I get "Compromise" finished (it is made up of material from the latest "Lost Lyrics" discovery, June 1999 then unused material 1986 to - well, I don't know yet, as I am taking it one lyric out the box at a time), this will be the last song in there, and therefore, the last ever Paul Murphy song. I guess I am glad that I went out writing about the injustices meted out to others. Although, in this instance, two of those others are the two angels most dear to my heart, soul and being.

Hello, thank you for viewing this video. This is a recital of 'In The Shadow Of St Paul', a song written in 1992.
Following my recent uploads of the "Lost Lyric" series, recital videos of that material that run to 35 minutes each, and which also contain back-storys, clips, unfinished pieces, I have been receiving more than a few kind requests to do some direct, one-on recitals, and this is a piece that deserves a one-on video.
This is the original handwritten lyric I am reading, from a cache of my song lyrics that were recently (re)discovered after being lost/mislaid for several decades. The lyric has been semi-extant for a while, as I put it forward as a possible MurphyYoungs song, when that duo was operative, and it appears in its slightly re-written 'MY' form in my lyric anthology "Songs Without Music". Here, in its first-thought format, it is somewhat darker, somewhat more distopian with a small 'd'.
Written 28.03.1992 (at 16.22 p.m., according to the annotation), I'm fairly certain that, if I was still playing solo at that time, this would have made my live set.
As an aside, there is an outtake version of this recital, where I had got thru' to the very last line, all silence and atmospheric - and then the Amazon driver hammers on the door, and I jump a mile out of my chair! I may upload it after I have gotten this tranche of videos on the channel. Descartes had it easy! (And why not, he had no idea if his back door existed when he wasn't opening it).

Hello, thank you for viewing this video. This is the third in a series, to document the cache of song lyrics, poems and prose pieces that were recently (re)discovered after being lost/mislaid for several decades.
I am trying to get as much of my material on record as possible whilst able, and in addition attempting to place some biographical background (and occasionally foreground) onto them as well. I appreciate this interrupts the flow, but I am in the end-stage of Progressive Bulbar Palsy Neurological disease, and I want to leave some 'history' for my children to know about me/my work when they grow up.
A tranche of lyrics from the first box file opened have not been anthologised, in the book "Shadows Behind Soft Words Of Love", and there are likewise recital videos of those pieces on my channel, if you care to view them. * I have recently [re]discovered a cache of around 200 mislaid lyrics, lost for over 25 years (see videos for 'Never Enough For You' and 'Vitriol Kisses' for fuller details). I am hoping to manuscript them up and try to get one final lyric/poetry/prose anthology out. The title is 'Shadows Behind Soft Words Of Love' [ISBN: 9798390152546]. I will pop the odd update on any videos I am able to make of the contents of those rediscovered lyric files.

Hello, and thank you for watching this video. This is a song by the very talented, and very much lamented, Townes Van Zandt. This is a songwriter's song - a masterpiece of lyric, storytelling, melody and structure.
I don't do it justice here - stepping on a dropped harmonica didn't help! - but I'm singing it and playing it from a respectful heart.

This is the second of two takes, the preceding one is on video 1868, whilst videos 1870 and 1871 are alternate versions of these takes, recorded on the safety camera and with different sound mix.
As a sidebar, Townes came up with one of the best descriptions ever about performing personal material live [referencing the great 'Waitin' Around to Die'] - "... nobody wants to hear blues on blues... on blues". Which I always used as a very good reason to do just that!
