From a concert at Club 7 in Oslo, 1978. I'm using the traditional title as I know it -- also used on a record with a different version/recording by O'Flynn -- rather than how the introducer calls it here. It's also referred to as "The Frieze Britches", "The Friar's Breeches" and apparently even "The Vicar's Knickers".

1988. The title reads to most of us as meaning "The Shieldmaiden Battle", but a fiddler friend has told me that in this context, "slaget" means "(the) tune", hence "The Shieldmaiden Tune". The legendary shieldmaidens that the title refers to have given name to a mountain near Setesdal called Skjoldmøynuten, "where they often sat and played so beautifully. They rode over the heathland and blowed their horns. Many know their tune still: it is called 'Skjoldmøyslaget', and it was so pretty that people cried when they heard it."
In this clip, Bjørgum plays "the tune of the tune", or the main melody, not the whole tune.

The Royal Theme, given to Johann Sebastian Bach by King Frederick the Great of Prussia (1712-1786) as a sort of challenge three years before Bach's death in 1750, followed by two of Bach's variations on that theme. It's possible or even likely that the Thema Regium was in fact composed by Bach's son, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, as he was the person at the king's court with the most knowledge about counterpoint -- the theme was intentionally composed so as to be difficult to write contrapuntal variations over.
Taken from the collection Bach titled "Musikalisches Opfer", or Musical Offering. All of the pieces contain variations on the Royal Theme -- this is intended as a sort of introductory selection focusing on the violin, and I think these go particularly well together (as if the whole thing doesn't...)
These recordings were directed by Jordi Savall, with the ensemble Le Concert des Nations, in 1999 and/or 2000. Released 2001.

One of the shorter and more conventional HPL stories, in the tradition of Arthur Machen and Edgar Allan Poe. Lovecraft wrote this one in early 1921; it was published in Weird Tales in 1926.
