I continue to hear wide-ranging yield estimates, perhaps this year more than any in recent history. Bulls are arguing that the early-heat and lack of moisture in June and part of July were more than enough to walk the average yield back to sub-175 levels. Bears continue to talk about cooperative weather in some important areas and record yields in some locations taking the US average north of 175 bushels per acre. Most of the weather traders are focused on dry conditions in parts of western Iowa, eastern Nebraska, and southern Minnesota and South Dakota. How the yields play out in those areas will more than likely ultimately determine which camp is correct. Outside of those regions, the weather has made a more clear impact either in a good or bad way, so the yield forecasts seem to be a bit more predictable. On the demand side of the equation, there is very little exciting or new to report. Corn used for ethanol last week stayed above +1.0 million barrels per day, which is good, and ethanol stockpiles were up only slightly at 23.4 million barrels, but still up over +3% from last year. Net-net, ethanol demand seems steady but with the consumer cutting back on miles driven it's tough to build a real nearby bullish story. Weekly export numbers will be released this morning but nobody is looking for a big number. In fact, several sources inside the trade now think the USDA might eventually have to trim their old-crop export number. Bottom line, there's just not a lot of fresh demand news at the moment to get the bulls excited. Technically, the bears remain in control as the market continues to trade well below its 100-Day Moving Average which sits just above $6.82, and below its 200-Day Moving Average which sits just under $6.24 per bushel. As a spec, I continue to hold some DEC22 out-of-the-money calls hoping the bulls can string together another run higher. The headlines that ships are now going to be able to leave Ukraine with grain exports, the strong US dollar, uncertainty regarding US-Chinese relations, and macro fears surrounding a global recession continue to limit the bullish fund appetite.
