Mr. Heflin's G-Scale Layout at the Midwest NMRA convention, Springfield, IL
Illinois Valley's Midwest NMRA meet was in Springfield, Illinois 2012. While touring the layouts around town, I stopped by to see Mr. Gene Heflin's G-scale layout. I have to say that Gene and His wife are the nicest people- and very hospitable! The Layout was fantastic, full of dioramas which brought it all to life! A small N-scale train, filling in for a circus miniuature riding train, a rising hot air balloon, and even a tram going up into a picture of mountains- just a really cool play ground for train lovers of all scales! Here is a short clip of my MTH Premier 4-8-4 "Santa Fe" 2900 class Northern and a Premier "BNSF" AC4400CW . Often on modern rail-fan trips with steam power, there is usually a Diesel-electric Loco lashed up as a helper and to supply electrical power for the coaches. So I thought of a "what if" Fan trip of a Santa Fe "2900" class Steam loco and a Burlington Northern Santa Fe Diesel circa 2010. When you watch you have to wait a minute for the train to come around. The 4-8-4 is a Protosound 2 upgrade I installed myself! I thought it looked pretty cool! (Those are Lionel Burlington Route GP-30s with TMCC in the background)

In September 2012 the Illinois Railway Museum's Burlington Route E5, the only one left in existence, piloted the "Nebraska Zephyr," on a scheduled-passenger excursion on its original tracks for the first time since its 1968 retirement. These tracks are the Mendota sub, of the BNSF line- and were the original CB&Q main running from Chicago to Quincy, IL with a stop in Galesburg, IL. I rode this on Sunday the 23rd. I covered all the on board shots in this video. Unfortunately- the train did a lot of rocking and it was hard to hold a steady shot with my camera when i was walking around. I also gathered videos of various fans who followed us on this historic trip and included them with this video. My seat was the last chair, in the last window, in the last car (the Parlor/observation Car). Joining me was my good friend Eddie B.- engineer for Iowa Interstate RR, my other friend from the IRM museum and director of operations for this excursion Harold K. and my mom. This is the entire round trip. So sit back and enjoy the ride! ~joe

On a morning in January the Iowa Interstate #513 in the Heritage colors of Rock Island ran solo as the only unit in the train. It was running west from Chicago (Blue Island) to the town of Silvis near Rock Island, Illinois. My buddy who is an engineer for IAIS and who was getting ready for his day shift called me out as the 513 arrived in Bureau Junction, Illinois. These are the shots I got with my new camera. Enjoy!

Here is a shot of MTH Railking's 4-8-4 Santa Fe #2927 repainted in CB&Q colors that I have in another video in which you take a ride around my house at Christmas. When I repainted this Steamer... I debated making the grey color silver...as true CB&Q regulations called for the smoke box and fire box to be graphite grey where it looks silver...but I couldn't resist...I liked the sliver better. :)
