[89] All About Market Monetarism with Scott Sumner and David Beckworth
Our lead story: Things aren't looking good for Citigroup. Last month CitiGroup said that they uncovered $400 million in bogus loans made to Mexican oil services company Oceanografia SA. These loans were made via Citi's Mexican subsidiary Banamex. Turns out Citigroup's capital plan also failed the annual stress test run by the Federal Reserve. Erin takes a look.
For our interviews today, Erin talks to Professors Scott Sumner and David Beckworth to get a market monetarist perspective on Fed policy, macroeconomics, and monetary policy. Watch to find out why they believe targeting nominal GDP is a more effective way for the Fed to run policy.
For today's Big Deal, Edward Harrison and Erin talk about China's credit crisis and discuss how a hard rain's gonna fall.
First up is the latest stats on world trade growth: we’re just learning 2015 will be the fourth year in a row with trade growth of less than three percent. Ameera David weighs in. Then, Bianca Facchinei takes a look at the controversy surrounding DuPont’s use of c8. Afterwards, Ameera and Erin Ade talk about Glencore’s stock tumbling.
After the break, Ameera sits down with Ron Paul – former US congressman and founder of the Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity – to talk about the 2016 presidential race. And in The Big Deal, Ameera and Edward Harrison discuss inflation.

Jobless claims in the United States are up for the first time in months as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to surge in some parts of the country. Meanwhile, as the novel coronavirus relief package is set to expire at the end of July, Senate Republicans have announced an agreement with the White House on what should be included in the next round of funding. With the jump in COVID-19 cases, several nations have barred US travelers from entering their borders. Plus, as airline and aviation stocks have taken a beating in the wake of the virus, Boeing is inching closer to the comeback of its 737 MAX jets re-certified by the FAA. In space news, several countries are launching missions to Mars this summer, and China may be taking the lead. The country announced a successful launch of its efforts, and if all goes well, the mission could be groundbreaking.
