BOW TO CAESAR, OR DIE--A PREVIEW OF THE TRIBULATION & THE ANTICHRIST, FROM REVELATION
As we open to Revelation 2:8-11 we are opening to the second of Christ's seven personal letters to individual churches of the late 1st Century. We looked at them as a group, but now we are taking a look at each individual church.
As we read these words, the historical context is that the Church at Smyrna was going through the second wave of persecution that the early church had to endure.
A Short History of
Early Church Persecution
Someone told me this week they could save the first half-hour of my messages by just “Google-ing” what I talk about, and implied they wanted me to just stick to reading the text of the Scripture. But for the rest of you that are willing, if you will bear with me, I’d like to give you a sanctified mind’s analysis of Church History: something that they could never get on Google.
The reason I share with you the background details of each passage we study is to show it to you through the lens of Scripture, and with my own lifetime analysis of these facts, which is vital to increase our understanding. That is actually one of the elements of expository preaching, which is my lifelong pursuit.
Church History records three notable waves of persecution from the Roman Emperors:
Wave #1: Emperor Nero (54-68 AD)
This persecution was sporadic and limited mainly to Rome, sweeping up Paul and Peter to execution.
Wave #2: Emperor Domitian (81-96 AD)
This persecution was wider than Nero’s, across some of the Roman Empire’s provinces, and hitting both the church at Smyrna and exiling John to Patmos.
Wave #3: Emperor Diocletian (284-305 AD)
This persecution was the greatest of any Roman Emperor against Christ's Church. Diocletian, who was one of the most administrative of all Rome’s rulers, began a systematic purge of Christianity, through an Empire-wide eradication of the Church, and he almost succeeded.
For the final nearly 10 years of Diocletian’s reign, he systematically decimated Christ's church. The main reason that there is not one single complete manuscript of the Bible today, and all we have are 20,000+ fragments and partial manuscripts are because of this one very powerful man.
Under Diocletian’s wave of persecution: every church meeting place that could be identified was pulled down; every pastor that could be found was killed; and every copy of God’s Word that could be discovered was destroyed.
The church came closest to extinction in those years.

Luke 21:11, 25-26 (NKJV) 11 And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven. Not only will the sun be darkened, and the stars fall, but there will also be great earthquakes in various places! 25 “And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; 26 men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
Part 3 of Christ’s Warning—“the powers of the heavens will be shaken”: Both natural and supernatural phenomena in the earth and sky appear to be increasing. And when Christ returns there will be cosmic quakes: “There will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven” (Luke 21:11).
On December 26, 2004, our planet was struck by the Sumatran-Andaman earthquake. That quake was so massive that scientists are still analyzing what happened. But this we do know: the earthquake lasted about ten minutes; it is the longest quake ever known and was the most powerful ever recorded. The quake, centered in the Indian Ocean, created the largest gash in the earth’s seabed ever observed. It was the second deadliest quake known to history. The quake was also the second-largest to hit our planet (that we are aware of ) and is only surpassed by the 1960 Chilean quake.
So we have lived through the second biggest, second deadliest, longest, and most powerful quake ever felt and measured by man. We have been warned that a space rock is headed closer than any has ever been and that it will be the first asteroid visible with the naked eye from earth. And, on May 15, 2005, we had the highest-level solar storm sighted by the NOAA.
Jesus was asked, “What will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?” So He ran down the now-familiar list of earthquakes, famines, wars, and pestilences. He said that all of these would come upon the earth like “birth pangs” that would increase in frequency and intensity as time grew near.
Jesus responded, “There will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory” (Luke 21:25–27). In the meantime, He told those who would witness the signs of His return, “Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near” (Luke 21:28).
One thing is certain: for the first time, man now has the ability to track smaller asteroids that could wreak enormous destruction on this planet.
This is creating increased anxiety over previously unknown threats from the heavens. This is what Jesus predicted would happen in the last days, and that is precisely why we all need hope that anchors!
The prophetic signs of Christ’s soon coming just keep multiplying.
Are you ready to meet Him?
How can you get ready?
Live in the hope of Christ’s return.
Trust Him with your future.
Wait upon Him to guide your daily life.
Avoid whatever grieves Him.
Resist fearing anything but God!

Consecration is giving our bodies as a living sacrifice to Christ. That is what Jesus says as we open to Luke 9. The truth of consecration is: “Losers are Keepers ”? God’s ways are so different than ours.
Remember when you went to school as a kid? Out in the playground, you learn a lot of things that stay through life. Here’s one I learned at the Haslett Elementary School in 1962 as someone scampered off with my quarter that had fallen out a hole in my jacket pocket as I was hanging upside down on the monkey bars, I’m sure you have heard the same:
“Finders keepers, losers (what?) weepers”. Right?
But is that true for life or just for a moment? Well, let’s find out. Turn to Luke 9:23-26 with me and follow along as we listen to what Jesus says;
Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. 24 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. 25 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost? 26 For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own glory, and in His Father’s, and of the holy angels.
Consecrated believers are living sacrifices for Christ. That is why repeatedly throughout Christ's teachings He kept solemnly affirming that everything in life we lose for Him we get to keep forever. But what we find and keep for ourselves we lose forever.
So in God’s accounting of our earthly lives (which is real and what will last forever), we see that—Losers are Keepers and Keepers are the Weepers!
So our lifelong reminder is to beware of:

All around us, the winds of apostasy are blowing stronger each day. As we open to Revelation 6, let me ask you: Are you anchored in the Doctrine of Christ?
More and more individuals who claim to be born-again Christians, and their churches and their denominations are slowly caving in to growing public opinion and societal pressures.
Satan, the god of this world is more at work than ever before. He is older, smarter, and has a vast communications system of world media consumption.
Our world is slowly self-defining God and His laws instead of honoring His Word. That falling away is called apostasy in the Bible from the compound Greek words: apo (from) and histemi (standing): apostasy – literally, "a leaving, from a previous standing."
Beware of Apostasy
Apostasy is not only denial of the Deity of Christ, or the Trinity of God.
Apostasy also encompasses the denial of Creation as described by the Bible, and substitutes ideas postulated by creatures, over the record given by the Creator.
Apostasy also denies that:
• Life begins at conception (as the Bible says); and that
• Marriage was designed by God only for a man and a woman (as the Bible says); and that
• Homosexuality is a sin just like fornication, adultery, and drunkenness (as the Bible says); and that
• Lying, stealing, pride, haughtiness, greed, disobedience to parents, drug usage, and witchcraft are all abominable sins (as the Bible says).
The winds are blowing stronger each day away from God in this world. It is like the start of a hurricane. Each hour the winds creep up in their strength, the trees and buildings sway, then bend, then often crack under the relentless push.

The Second Coming is the Day of the Lord
In God's Word, the description of Christ's Second Coming covers over 1,800 verses and employs several key Biblical terms. But the most crucial of all those terms is the one known as the Day of the Lord.
We are examining the Day of the Lord in two parts. Last time we looked at the Lord, the One whose Day it is. We saw that He is coming in the person of God the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. In Hebrews 1:1-3 we saw that the:
Ruler of Everything is coming, as described by those words at the end of v. 3: Jesus Christ “sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high”.
Jesus is seated in Heaven right now, at the Right Hand of God the Father, interceding for us His Church. Our Savior Himself is going to stand up, empty Heaven of every angel and every saint, and come back to finish the plan of God. One way to express this event is to merge the two key descriptions and call this event:
The Day of the Lord’s Second Coming
When the Inheritor of Everything, the Creator of Everything, the Radiator of God’s Glory, Character of God, and the Sustainer of Everything, the Purifier of Sins, returns as the Ruler of Everything: the Universe begins to convulse.

Revelation 18:4-8 is a repetition of the continually repeated warning. God wants us, His saints, to live out our high calling. We are called to be holy in all parts of our lives. To “separate from” and “get out of Babylon” is called for seven times in the Word of God. (See Isaiah 48:20; 52:11; Jeremiah 50:8-9; 51:6, 8; Zechariah 2:6-7; Revelation 18:4.) Some of the key calls of God have been for men to get out of worldliness. You may be thinking: Wait a minute, this is the Tribulation, the end of the world. So what is this? There are still going to be Christians on the planet. There will always be Christians on this planet because we have the two witnesses (Revelation 11), the 144,000 (Revelation 7 and 14), and the angel preaching the everlasting gospel (Revelation 14). The gospel is continually going out, and people will be responding throughout the Tribulation.
From the Garden of Eden to the end of time, God has the same call to His saints: “Come out of worldliness! Get away from the worship of this world!” Look at what He has to say about this in the following verses.
God called Abraham out of his world to follow His way: “… ‘Get out of your country, from your family And from your father’s house, to a land that I will show you’ ” (Genesis 12:1).
God called Lot to totally abandon the sinfulness of Sodom: “Then the men said to Lot, ‘Have you anyone else here? Son-in-law, your sons, your daughters, and whomever you have in the city—take them out of this place!’ ” (Genesis 19:12).
God called Moses to stay out of the very presence of those rebelling against the Lord: “… ‘Speak to the congregation, saying, “Get away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram” ’ ” (Numbers 16:23-24).
God promises great blessing for living a life that avoids the ungodliness around us: “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law, he meditates day and night” (Psalm 1:1-3).
Jesus prayed for our realization that this world is not our home: “I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one …” (John 17:14-16).
God expects His children to come out—and stay out—of worldliness: “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? … For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: ‘I will dwell in them and walk among them. Love is the absence of selfishness. It is the product of the Holy Spirit present in our lives (Rom. 5:5).
Personal checkup question: Do I sacrifice my way so I can follow God’s way? Do I sacrificially deny myself so God gets His way?
Joy is the spiritual quality that releases us from circumstances; because love and self-centeredness cannot co-exist. However, the Apostle Paul said that he was II Cor. 6:10 - sorrowful yet always full of joy.
Personal checkup question: Do those that know me and watch my life see evidence throughout my daily life at work, school, and home as a more and more joyful person?
Peace is the internal serenity that only God can give. Troubles are not absent. Rather, God is present! God promised to keep us in peace, if we will just cling to Him (Isaiah 26:3).
Personal checkup question: Has peace through changes, upsets, unexpected twists, struggles, challenges, trails, and pains become more and more a way of life for me this year?
Longsuffering/Patience is the absence of personal irritation at the actions of others. It is that bearing long with people that Paul spoke of in I Corinthians. Patience is also one of the Supreme attributes of God. It is His character that is revealed as being gracious and longsuffering. See Ex. 34:6; Num. 14:18; II Peter 3:9.
Personal checkup questions: Ask yourself: am I more patient than I was three months ago, or less?
KINDNESS is a beautiful reflection of God in our lives. It is the absence of an abrasive manner in my dealings with people. It is a chosen reflection of Ephesians 2:8 and 4:32 in my life. “Kindness is seen as that sensitivity toward others that issues into deeds of self sacrifice and love even toward the unlovely and undeserving ones”.
Personal checkup questions: Is God changing my way of looking at people and responding towards people?
GOODNESS is being Godlike! It is the opposite of fallen humanity. Look at how Jesus is described in Acts 10:38, when the Holy Spirit anointed His life: He simply went about doing good.
Personal checkup questions: Am I a visibly better person than last year to those that feel my life up close?
FAITHFULNESS is the idea here. God wants to produce in us a trustworthy and dependable life. Surrendering our schedules to God makes us the kind of person that keeps their own life in order so that you can count on them. Any part of my life that is out of control is reminding me that area is not under God’s control.
