Walking is important for several reasons, both for physical and mental well-being. Here are some key reasons why walking is beneficial:
Physical Health: Walking is a low-impact exercise that offers numerous health benefits. Regular walking can help improve cardiovascular fitness, strengthen muscles, and enhance overall endurance. It can contribute to weight management by burning calories and boosting metabolism. Walking also promotes better circulation, bone strength, and joint flexibility. Engaging in regular physical activity like walking has been associated with a reduced risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer.
Mental Well-being: Walking has positive effects on mental health and well-being. It can help reduce stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression. Walking outdoors in natural environments provides exposure to sunlight and fresh air, which can enhance mood and boost vitamin D levels. Walking also offers an opportunity for relaxation, mindfulness, and contemplation. It can help clear the mind, improve cognitive function, and enhance creativity.
Accessibility and Versatility: Walking is an accessible form of exercise for most people, as it requires no special equipment or training. It can be easily incorporated into daily routines, such as walking to work, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or going for a stroll during breaks. Walking can be done alone or with others, making it a versatile activity suitable for different fitness levels and age groups. Additionally, walking can be adapted to various terrains and environments, allowing for exploration and discovery.
Social Engagement: Walking provides an opportunity for social interaction and connection. Walking with friends, family, or walking groups can foster social relationships, provide support, and make the activity more enjoyable. It can also serve as a shared experience for communication and bonding.
Longevity and Aging: Regular walking has been associated with increased longevity and a reduced risk of age-related health issues. It can help maintain mobility, balance, and coordination as we age, reducing the risk of falls and injuries. Walking also supports healthy brain aging and cognitive function, potentially lowering the risk of dementia and cognitive decline.
To reap the benefits of walking, aim for a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity walking per week or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity walking. Remember to wear comfortable shoes, stay hydrated, and start gradually if you're new to walking or increasing your activity level. Consult with a healthcare professional before beginning any new exercise program, especially if you have pre-existing medical conditions.

It was a beautiful day in Dan’s neighborhood, so he decided to take a quick bike ride down to Hayden Lake, to show us around. This is one of his happy places, and I am grateful that he shared it with us. I am also relieved to see that he is recovering from the Rona plague. Rumor has it that he got it from me. I am mostly relieved to know that it didn’t kill him – mostly. (It’s gonna take a lot to bring him down.) They say that which doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. I say that which doesn’t kill Dan had better run like hell. Haha!
HAYDEN LAKE
Hayden Lake, with its crystal clear waters, sandy beaches and picturesque timber shores, is one of the most beautiful and popular lakes of North Idaho. Its irregular shape gives it about 40 miles of shoreline, with the main portion of the lake being seven miles long and one to two miles in width. Normal lake elevation is 2,239 ft. above sea level, and portions of it reach 800 feet deep.
The lake is surrounded on three sides by panoramic timbered mountains, which rise to an elevation of nearly 6,000 feet and extend for many miles to the east as part of the Bitterroot Mountain Range. Much of this land is the Coeur d’Alene National Forest, which offers excellent hunting, fishing and camping.
Parks and beaches: There are three boat ramps accessing the lake, located at Honeysuckle Beach, Sportsman’s Park and the full-service Tobler’s Marina. At Sportsman’s Park on the north end, there are camp sites and handicapped facilities. The sandy shores of Honeysuckle Beach has a roped swim area, dock, public change house and restrooms. The principle town nearby is Hayden.
Fishing: The lake plays host to a long list of recommended game fish, including bluegill, pumpkinseed, sunfish, bullhead catfish, crappie, largemouth and smallmouth bass, yellow perch, northern pike and rainbow trout.
