This weeks book of the week is Composting For A New Generation by by Michelle Balz and Anna Stockton. This is a great indepth book about composting, types of composting, different setups, what you should and should not add to your pile, and why should you compost. This is the same book that got me to decide to make a compost pile in my backyard, to supplement our plants, herbs and vegetables, since we have poor heavy clay as a soil type. I personally don't add any food scrapes with the exception of coffee grounds, to keep the smell negligible, and the pests away. This is a good book to have for farming and homesteaders alike. A personal tip: Sometimes I get lazy, and place larger items like tomato plant branches into the pile, and they take what seems as months to break down. So my tip, which is in the book, and is very accurate, when you can, cut larger items up into smaller pieces, this gives more surface area for the microorganisms to break down the material, and it will break down much faster.
