September 9, 2011 was the date for the Trains, Planes and Automobiles festival in Geneseo, Illinois. My friend and I followed Iowa Interstate's 2-10-2 class steam locomotive #6988 to Bureau Junction, IL and then back to Annawan, Illinois. On Friday October 7th 2011, Iowa Interstate Railroad's East Train, led by locomotive #513 the "Rock Island" was coming into Illinois Valley on its way to Chicago. First stop in the Valley, was Bureau Junction, IL. About 8 miles west of Bureau Junction, in the tiny town of Tiskilwa, IL the 513's consist derailed. 26 cars total with 6 ethanol cars exploding and burning. The entire town of Tiskilwa was evacuated. Later that morning I flew over the wreck site in hopes of getting photos for an Iowa Interstate employee who's a friend of mine and was waiting at Bureau for alternate orders. Unfortunately there was lots of turbulence and I could not get a smooth ride. I was also dodging Chicago's Channel 7 ABC news helicopter who I also was talking to on the radio.
