Groups of two players each, one ball per group. Two lines of cones are spaced 10 yards (9m) apart.
Player 1 dribbles to the far line, performs a turn (change of direction) then passes to player 2. The exercise continues. Players are free to choose any turn/change of direction they want.

This is a good 1v1 dribbling exercise from the Portuguese academy. This grid is approximately 25 yds long by 20 yds wide. I shot this on one of my first visits to Benfica's academy.
The objective is for the dribbler to not get dispossessed by the defender. The dribbler has 4 gates he can dribble through: the one directly in front of him, the one to his left, the one to his right or the one he just started from. He gets 2 points for the gate directly in front of him and 1 point for any of the other three.
This a great exercise because it gives the dribbler options and doesn’t force him into one scenario. I also like that this exercise can help a coach determine who his/her most dominant dribblers are. The strongest dribblers will drive toward the gate directly ahead of them while players ‘less confident’ will opt for the gates to the left, the right or behind.
I also like the defensive aspect of this exercise as the defender must move quickly to shut down the dribbler and force a decision. The defender will be successful if he can force the dribbler to any gate other than the one behind him.

Players love this one. Its fairly self-explanatory: two players stand across from each other with two different colored cones in between them. The trainer calls out different body parts (or the grass/shoes/shinguards, etc) and the players move both hands there. The players must keep both hands there until the trainer calls out the next body part. At some point the trainer will call a color of one of the cones and the first player to grab that cone wins.
Another great version of this exercise is only one cone but with a ball on top. When the trainer calls ‘ball’ the first player to grab the ball and raise it above his head wins the round. If both players grab the ball at the same time they must try to win it from the other (tug of war). Both hands must stay on the ball at all times (no grabbing jerseys, arms etc). The players must stay on their feet at all times. If a player falls to the ground, he loses. If a player wins the ball from the other he must raise it above his head to be declared the winner. This is great for goalkeepers.
Also, play a ‘Scottish tournament to declare an ultimate winner. After each round, each player moves one position to the right or to the left. He moves to the right if he won the round and to the left if he lost the round. The only two players that don’t move is the winner in the top bracket (far right) and the loser in the bottom bracket (far left). Play enough rounds to give every player a chance to reach the top bracket. So, if you have 14 players ( 7 groups of 2) you play at least 6 rounds. Once this happens, play just one ‘final’ with the 2 players in the top bracket. Before the final, have the rest of the players attempt to predict who will win by standing one side of the pair or the other.

I saw this during my recent visit to Bayern’s 'FC Bayern Campus'. This is
a great dribbling exercise that puts the dribbler under pressure. I
observed the u13’s doing this exercise and they were having a blast.
At the trainer’s signal, the dribblers attempt to dribble to the yellow
line of cones and back across the start line before his defender tags
him.
The dribbler MUST dribble the ball between the yellow cones before
turning. He cannot stop short to avoid being tagged or he is disqualified.
The trainer can give specific turns for the players to use or can give
them the freedom to choose. Personally, I think a combination works best,
especially for younger players. Give them specific turns (pull back,
Cruyff etc.) at the start of the exercise and to finish the exercise let
them use whatever turn they want.
The distance of the cones above are for u13 players but will vary
depending on the speed/level of your players. If the dribblers are being
tagged to easily, move the start line for the defenders back.
Above: about 4 yards from start line to yellow line and about 15 yards
from the defenders line to the yellow line.

Twelve-year-old Kai, who is the eldest of former England captain Rooney's four sons, signed his first contract with United in December 2020.
He is currently in the same United youth team as Cristiano Ronaldo's son, Cristiano Jr. But it was the relative of another current first-team player who assisted Kai's goal against City.
Tunde Shoretire, who is the younger brother of 18-year-old Shola Shoretire, passed the ball to Kai, who controlled the ball and chipped it over the keeper in just two touches.

Simplicity. I remember my first visit to a professional European academy, PSV Eindhoven, in Holland, about 20 years ago. I had with me 2 pads of paper and several pens for fear that one would not work and I would miss something. This is when I had my first major revelation when observing training at this level. The revelation was how simple, yet effective, the training was at the professional level. This clip from Celtic is a perfect example.
If you have trained with YPT you already understand that ‘it’s the little things’ that matter.
This looks like a basic passing and receiving but if you watch closely you might notice there is a little more to it. Normally, this would be categorized as a ‘passing and receiving’ exercise but, to me, this is a ‘receiving and passing’ exercise because what I really like about this exercise is not so much the technical passing and receiving part but, more, the movement off the ball.
Watch closely and you will see that once the player receives the ball, and passes back, he checks away at one speed (slower) but then checks back TO the ball a bit quicker, as it should be done. In a game situation, when you don’t have the ball, you want to move in a way that makes your marker (defender) think that you don’t want the ball but then in a sharp movement you check quickly to the ball to give yourself maximum time and space to make your next decision.

Another simple, yet effective, passing and receiving exercise from Atletico’s academy. This was done before their UEFA Youth League match vs Genk, from Belgium.
As always, take note of the finer points here. First, when receiving, notice that the players are not simply controlling/stopping the ball but preparing it in the direction of the next pass. The players are preparing the ball to the opposite side of the cone or pole at which they received it. Its intentional and its clean.
Note how the players run directly to the pole before moving quickly away from it to receive the ball, as if checking away from a defender.
As for the passing, notice that all passes are being played to the right foot. The players at the cones are receiving and passing with only the right foot. The players at the poles are receiving with the right but are passing with the left. It is a ‘surface specific’ exercise.
After a certain amount of time, the exercise would go in the opposite direction with all passes being played to the left food.
Also note the intensity and tempo of this exercise.
