I Somehow managed to Fit a round Picture in a Square Frame! AND Almost broke the Picture Glass!
I Somehow managed to Fit a round Picture in a Square Frame! AND Almost broke the Picture Glass! We have a picture hanging over our dining room table that has been needing a new frame for a long time. It is a round picture, or be better described as an oval picture. It would be fun to make an oval picture frame, but that would not match all of the farmhouse style furniture and frames that we already have on this level of our house. I decided to try and make a square picture frame that would house this round picture! I somehow managed to make it work with only a few mistakes that you will never know unless I tell you or you look very very closely!
This picture frame is made out of maple to match the rest of the furniture in the kitchen. My workshop using my table saw, miter saw table and router table.
This week I show you how to make a new bandsaw table and add a removable dust collection port. Bandsaws create way more fine dust then you think and they are a real weakness when it comes to actively collecting that floating dust. This bandsaw dust collection hack is simple, removable and collects all the find dust right at the blade.

Have always wanted to make a box joint jig and have several projects coming up that I will need one so now was a good time to make one. Tried several different designs that I saw and liked but they each had their own finicky issues and decided after spending several days to try a proven and excellent design and I chose John Heisz's design and am super pleased that I did! Check out the build video and head over the Ibuildit.ca for the plans.
This jig can be made from a section of plywood 18"x48" and a few hardwood scraps. It is very accurate, repeatable and solidly built, I am very pleased and highly re comment this design if you have every wanted to build such a tool.

Inventables was kind enough to send me an X-Carve and I needed a way to get this huge tool out of the way when it is not in use. Wanted to build something similar to Steve Carmichael's folding table but I wanted it to be mounted to the wall and to have build in storage for bits, wrenches and other tools.
I used a torsion table assembly for the table top to try and keep the surface as even and ridgid as possible and a french cleat to help me easily mount the table to the wall.

As I mature (aka get older) my night vision is degrading and once I got my Chevy pickup truck it was very difficult to see behind the truck while in reverse. Knowing that I had a 7 pin trailer plug on the Silverado I knew that I had easy access to the reverse lights power.
A quick Amazon search resulted in some low cost HIGHLY reviewed LED light bars with a multitude of options. I chose a flood light LED pair for about twenty dollars and got some accessories while I was at it.
I fabricated a custom metal bracket to hold the LED lights and welded it using my Lincoln 210MP onto the trailer bar of the truck. I chose this location as the trailer ball attachment is lower then the lights offering some protection from any parking bumps, toys or shrubs that might get hit.
I tapped into the reverse and ground wires of the trailer hitch plug and attached my LEDs. NOTE: the red wire on the LED light bar is the positive (polarity is important.) Originally I wanted to make the wire termination with some Wago connectors sealed with silicone but ran into some issues. The wago connectors were supposed to be able to accept stranded wire but the wire from the LED bars was not able to push through the spring terminal so I resorted to wire nuts. I wanted to seal everything with silicone but for some strange reason the LED lights would not work when I sealed the wire nuts, anyone have any theories let me know in the comments! In the end I simply wire nutted and sealed everything with electrical tape. Easy enough to add a few water tight connectors later if I need to, it has held up for a few months of NASTY weather already.

The sun and harsh weather has ruined two canvas porch swings but to today I will show you How To Make A Porch Swing Ergonomic, $120 and Comfortable! After a long day's work there is nothing better than sitting on something you build while surveying your hard work. When I designed this swing I made it so that it could be built from dimensional lumber you can get at the home center but I had a bunch of cherry I got got pennies on the dollar, I really like the look of cherry so that is what I used! You can use pressure treated lumber, cedar, or even white pine as long as you finish it promptly.
DIYTyler Porch Swing Plans: https://www.diytyler.com/GglXS
The two person porch swing has curves in the seat and on the back and has proven to be very comfortable even for long periods of time. If you download the plans you will get three files, the plans, and two 1:1 templates that allow you to print and make a template to get the curves right every time. The plans do not include a frame to hang the swing but there are plenty of options on the internet to fill that gap.

I have a TON of cabinet doors and drawer faces to paint in the near future and wanted to develop a convenient way of finishing them without having to walk around the work piece as I am spraying the finish. I went on Instagram and looked up different painters and cabinet makers to see if I could find a reference to work from or any other good ideas. I found a guy that had a sweet paint turntable / tripod setup that allowed him to spin his work piece without having to touch it and and get fingerprints all over his hard work.
Check out John Coppola, and give him a follow, he deserves more than 1300 followers!

Anyway, I spent a decent amount of time trying to come up with a clever yet inexpensive spinning / tripod / painting / spraying / turntable thingy and it hit me that a cheap spinning stool from Harbor Freight would be a great starting point.
I used the base of a spinning mechanics stool and added a spacer to bring the height to a more comfortable level. Added some arms to spin the turntable without touching the freshly painted work piece and a removable top that can be easily replaced once it gets too gummy.
I have used this to spray some smaller pieces and it worked great, excited to use it for all the doors and drawer faces that I need to finish up!
