What is the kind of Prayer that works? The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much – James 5:16. 1. Prayer with POWER. "Effectual fervent" is the word “energeo”. It means to be active, to do, to be mighty in, to work. By prayer we tap into the supernatural power of God. God is able. His power works in us, especially as we pray. We need the power of God. This will only come as we truly learn to pray, and act prayerfully. Elijah prayed and saw powerful results. It was the power of faith. Prayer is powerful because it is heard by God. Psalms 65:2 O thou that hearest prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come. God hears the prayers of His people. He is always listening. 2. Prayer with PASSION. It is FERVENT - “burning with passion”. Real prayer is an intense pleading, by faith, at the throne of grace. It is prayer from a heart burdened for others. It is persevering prayer. We need to pray, more earnestly. Luke 22:44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. We can give up too soon. We can get so easily distracted or discouraged in prayer. Prayer doesn’t need to be lengthy, wordy, or fancy. But let the prayer be from the heart, ablaze with love for Christ, for souls, with love for the truth. Psalms 63:1 …my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee… Here is prayer with intensity and passion… prayer that comes from a deep desire to see God move. Bunyan: “In prayer it is better to have a heart without words than words without heart.” James 5:17 Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain… Elijah prayed more earnestly. He was a man of like passions, in the sense of human weaknesses. Also the passions of Elijah included a passion we would do well to have, the passion to pray. When Peter was put in prison, the early church faced a great trial. They prayed earnestly for him. Acts 12:5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him. And that prayer worked. It was passionate prayer - fervent prayer. We should also be passionate in our prayers for others. We should pray for their needs, their hurts, and their struggles. We must pray, and pray through. We must pray until our hearts are fully in tune with the heart and will of God. That our passions will be His passions. A biblical passion. Some have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge (Rom. 10:2). There’s much false teaching, much misguided passion. Some people are fervent and have zeal, yet it’s wrong. They are misled. 3. Prayer with PURITY. Our verse tells of a RIGHTEOUS MAN. The prayer that works will be the prayer of the righteous. A righteous man is made right with God. He is in a right relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ. We are called to right living. Our Lord rebukes the Pharisees, Mark 7:6-7 …This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. 7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me… Their prayers were vain. They claimed to be righteous, but were not. Our heart can be made right with God… As David cried out, Psalms 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. What is "a righteous man"? One who has received the righteousness of Christ - given by God. God has declared him righteous based on his faith in the finished work of Christ. A righteous man is one who has had his sins forgiven by faith in Christ. There is the realisation of sin, of the overwhelming need for God’s awesome grace. As we trust Him, His blood washes away all sin and the righteousness of Christ is imputed to us. Unless we are righteous, the Lord will not receive our prayer. Psalms 66:18 If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me. There is a barrier that gets in the way of our prayers from reaching God. Isaiah 59:1, 2 - Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. Who are the people whose prayers get heard? 1 Peter 3:12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. As God’s righteous people, we will want to communicate with our Heavenly Father. Our prayer life will help us live right. Learn to pray. Pray through. PRAYER CHANGES THINGS - When just men and women pray, the Lord makes His tremendous power available to them. We can know such prayer power.
