This film explores the geopolitical situation of the late medieval period wherein an enabled papacy, thanks to its projection of spiritual authority onto temporal powers, became increasingly political and corrupt. With the advent of climate change that caused the little ice age in the early 1300's, there followed the great famine of 1315 that killed a quarter of Europe's population, as well as causing a collapse of the livestock, grain supply and local economies for decades. Just as they began to recover, Europe was then hit by the Black Death (or Bubonic Plague) in 1346, which caused the death of upwards of half the remaining population. Labour shortages then caused peasant and working class unrest, as well as a growing sense that the end of the world was coming. Both they and the professors in the universities, squarely viewed the church, its endemic corruption and the scandal of first, the Avignon Papal "Babylonian Captivity" and then the subsequent Great Schism that saw multiple competing anti-popes, as being in need of serious reform. In England, John Wycliff began his series of tirades against the pope in Rome, while in Bohemia, nationalist stirrings by an oppressed Czech population led to a similar movement led by priest and university professor Jan Hus (or John Huss). The Suez Crisis of 1956 was triggered by the nationalization of the Suez Canal by Egypt's President Nasser, which angered the UK and France, as they relied heavily on the canal for their oil supplies- when Nasser finally acted to secure the canal, the UK and France, along with Israel, conspired to launch a military operation to regain control of Suez, without consulting the United States or informing the United Nations. On October 29, 1956, the Israeli army invaded the Sinai Peninsula, followed by British and French forces a few days later. The invasion was initially successful, and the forces quickly advanced towards the canal. However, the operation was met with international condemnation, and the United States, the Soviet Union, and other countries called for an immediate ceasefire. The Egyptians meanwhile decided that if they couldn’t have it, nobody would, so as the British and French troops came ashore the Egyptians scuttled dozens of huge tankers in the canal, rendering it impassable and useless till the following year – causing significant disruption to oil supplies and consequently crippling price hikes all across the globe. The Suez Crisis had a significant impact on the UK's international standing, and was seen by many as a turning point in the country's decline as a global power. The UK's involvement in the crisis was widely criticized, both domestically and internationally, and many saw it as evidence of the country's inability to adapt to the changing international landscape. Prime Minister Anthony Eden was criticised even from within his own party, and resigned as a result. The costs incurred in the failed campaign, the withdrawal of troops and compromised oil supply led to a serious economic impact on the British economy and a devaluation of the Pound sterling. It also accelerated the decolonisation process of British and French dominions around the globe, which several historians have criticised as being overly hurried and poorly managed, resulting in a succession of civil wars and humanitarian disasters throughout former dominions, particularly in Africa. The crisis also highlighted the growing divide between the UK and the United States, which had opposed the military intervention from the outset and openly sided with Egypt. Heracles (Hercules), in ancient Greek mythology was a demi-God, who had been placed under an evil spell by his step-mother Hera which caused him to murder his wife and children. To expiate his sins, he was placed into the servitude of his cousin, the King of Tyrins, who was to task him with 12 challenges to complete in atonement. Neither his jealous cousin, nor Hera wanted Heracles to survive, much less complete these tasks, so they devised ingenious and impossibly dangerous challenges for him, sure that he would fail and die, never to see his loved ones in the afterlife. The story of how Heracles overcame each of these tasks was immensely popular in the ancient world and was known as the Twelve Labours of Heracles. This short extract from our video on Albert Facey: Old School Toughness and Character, gives a brief account of the Australian Gold Rush of the late 19th Century, which turned Melbourne, Victoria from a sleepy backwater into one of the worlds most glamorous cities in the span of just 40 years. So much gold poured into Britain's treasury from the gold boom that it paid off its entire national debt, and fuelled its rapid industrialisation. Migrants flowed into Australia from all over the world, but when the gold ran out- famines and disease took a heavy toll on the population, and the towns vacated as miners moved interstate to new goldfields, and farmers were left to cope with the onset of droughts and unemployment. It was a generation that grew up in extreme hardship that would produce tough, resilient iconic pioneers who would go on to build Australia into the cosmopolitan modern nation it is today.
