An excerpt from our controversial documentary revisiting the life of Napoleon Bonaparte - a much maligned figure of European history, who nevertheless implemented radical social, political and institutional changes that have a direct relationship to modern European Union. In this clip we briefly address the common misperception that Napoleon was a racist, based not on reality, but on Allied propaganda, that would stop at nothing to remove this threat to their own power. Heracles (Hercules) was a mythological demi-God in Ancient Greece, who had inadvertently killed his family while under a magical spell. To expiate his sins, he was required to perform 12 tasks, chosen by his jealous cousin, the king of Tyrins. The impossible nature of these challenges, and fortitude with which Heracles undertook them gained him honour among the Gods of Olympus, as well as Immortality - not least for the popularity of the story of his 12 Labours. In this excerpt we look at his Second Labour: killing the many-headed Hydra. You can view the full video on Heracles here: https://youtu.be/wWR0Y8_wDZ8

When many people think of Africa, they visualise wide open spaces, incredible wildlife and colourful friendly people with vibrant cultures, costumes and music. We might also contemplate the tragedy of the African slave trade and the consequences of colonialism. But what if I told you there was one powerful African kingdom in particular, that, when they first came into contact with Europeans, voluntarily and enthusiastically transformed their entire civilisation almost overnight– adopting the language, religion, fashion and even feudal aristocratic customs of the Portuguese, establishing diplomatic embassies in Lisbon, Madrid and even the Vatican, training their own clergy and corresponding regularly with popes and monarchs across Europe as well as participating in the political machinations of a post-renaissance Europe at war with itself. Though their story ultimately was to come to a tragic end, it was full of political intrigue, amazon warrior queens, and a quest for power that was integral to the History of the West, particularly in the Americas, which was inexorably linked to the kingdom’s rise and fall. If you’re just a little bit curious about this powerful, deeply catholic kingdom in the darkest heart of Africa, then join us as we dive into the history of the Kingdom of Kongo; its troubled relationship with Portugal and its tragic role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade; whose incredible heroes would go on to inspire generations of their descendants, with stories of mighty Amazon warrior queens; and tales of the Brazilian Black Spartacus and his renegade kingdom of Palmares.

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh had a turbulent youth. Born in Corfu, and a member of the Greek and Danish Royal families, his parents and siblings were forced to flee to Britain following the tumultuous years of World War One in Greece. His mother, a Schizophreniac, ended up in a mental asylum, while his father absconded to Monte Carlo to live the life of a playboy, leaving the young prince in the care and responsibility of relatives.
His time in the Schule Schloss boarding school of his brother-in-law the Margrave of Baden came to an abrupt end with the onset of the Nazi regime, and he fled, along with his Jewish mentor, headmaster Kurt Hahn, to Scotland, where he finished his schooling at Gordonstoun under his tutelage, and then enrolled in the Royal Naval Academy. At the outbreak of World War 2, Philip excelled in his studies and his military service - as a foreigner - to the United Kingdom, being decorated for his decisive tactics against night raid attacks, and in the Battle of Cape Matapan. In this short excerpt, we look briefly at Philip's Wartime record and his correspondence with Princess Elizabeth, whom he would marry in 1947. This excerpt is part of our video on Prince Philip, which you can view in its entirety here: https://youtu.be/dNUACmwtQwU

September 2022 marks the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the globe by the expedition led by Ferdinand Magellan (Fernando de Magallanes/Fernão de Magalhães), and completed by Juan Sebastian Elcano- and it should be mentioned, a young slave boy by the name of Henry (Enrique) of Malacca. The story of how the spurned Portuguese Captain went to work for the Spanish is full of court intrigue, international espionage, daring exploits and narrow escapes; but also one of tragic blunders, mutiny and betrayal. Underscoring the fierce competition between Spain and Portugal for naval supremacy and a trade monopoly to the Orient is also the drama of East-West confrontation; the demise of Islamic hegemony and the emergence of European global economic & military dominance and a clash of cultures that changed the face of the world forever.

The Wesley brothers formed what was at first a club at Oxford University, where they and several colleagues systematically set about living a holy life through an organised set of practices. They received Communion every week, fasted regularly, abstained from alcohol, gambling and other addictive pleasures and made it a requirement to frequently visit the sick and the poor, as well as prisoners in gaol. The fellowship was branded "Methodist" by campus students because of the way the club used "rules" and "method" to go about their daily religious affairs. John took a liking to the initially derogatory taunt and eventually adopted it as the formal name of the movement. The Brothers eventually travelled to America, preaching and themselves coming under the influence of the Moravian Church and its strong spiritual heritage, which they conveyed back to England upon their return home. Wesley would go on to become a much loved preacher, advocating for women's rights as well as an end to slavery, becoming a fundamental source of inspiration to the abolitionist movement which would arise in his wake. Margaret Thatcher's father was a Wesleyan lay-preacher and the philosophy of this church made a huge impact on her personal and political thinking, such that it is impossible to understand her legacy properly, without knowing the fundamentals of the church she grew up in.

Few people know about the broader history of Ireland, and its long and tragic relationship with England: the uprisings and repression, the famines and exodus, or the political persecution that condemned activists to rot half way round the world as convicts in the brutal penal colonies of Australia. In this video, we’ll take a brief look at Irish history, its complex historical relationship with Britain, and as an interesting aside, the little known, though extraordinarily daring breakout of Fenian political prisoners from one of colonial Australia’s toughest convict prisons. From the post-Roman period and St Patrick; the Viking raids; the Anglo-Norman conquest, integration and and Tudor Protestant Plantations, through the Nine Years War, The War of the three Kingdoms; the Potato Famine and Fenian rising- aided by American ex-pats who were on a tragic journey of their own; the imprisonment, and escape of of rebels and the eventual push for Home Rule and lasting scars; in this video we examine the broad sweep of the Irish people's struggle for liberty, equality and sovereignty. Join us as we dive into the history of the Irish Problem, Fenian Rebels and the Catalpa rescue.

Heracles (Hercules), in ancient Greek mythology was a demi-God, who had been placed under an evil spell by his step-mother Hera which caused him to murder his wife and children. To expiate his sins, he was placed into the servitude of his cousin, the King of Tyrins, who was to task him with 12 challenges to complete in atonement. Neither his jealous cousin, nor Hera wanted Heracles to survive, much less complete these tasks, so they devised ingenious and impossibly dangerous challenges for him, sure that he would fail and die, never to see his loved ones in the afterlife. The story of how Heracles overcame each of these tasks was immensely popular in the ancient world and was known as the Twelve Labours of Heracles. This short excerpt deals with the First Labour - Killing the Nemean Lion. You can view the full video on Heracles here: https://youtu.be/wWR0Y8_wDZ8

In today’s video, we will look at the life of Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas, a Dominican Priest who, during the 1500’s at the time of Spanish conquest in the Americas, has been called the “world’s first Social Justice Warrior”. But his isn’t a cosy story of messianic devotion to a cause held firmly in his breast from the outset. He was, in the beginning, one of the bad guys, up to his elbows in it. But then something happened that would transform him into a relentless champion of human rights at a time when the phrase didn’t even exist; taking part in the legendary Valladolid debate; pushing the Pope to issue a Human Rights Bull on behalf of indigenous people; hustling an audience with Charles V, Habsburg King of Spain and Holy Roman Emperor; and then going on to publish what is considered the first anthropology textbook on the Americas. His tireless campaigning would lead to changes in attitudes and law, that provided a foundation for the European enlightenment centuries later. And yet, today in the West, he and compatriots such as Fray Antonio Montesinos largely remains one of the unknown heroes of history, being overshadowed by conquistadors such as Pizarro, Cortez and Columbus.

One of the interesting aspects of Islam is its insistence on each person performing a pilgrimage (or Hajj) to Mecca at least once in their life if at all possible. It forms part of the Five Pillars of Islam; and in the medieval Muslim world, it enabled individuals to travel across borders, relatively unmolested and supplied with shelter, food and gifts by the rulers of the lands they passed along the way. This created incredible opportunities for people to mix, and to seek opportunities away from their homelands, in ways that were unimaginable for Christians of the time. In this short clip we touch on the 5 pillars, and get a sense of the pilgrim's journey during the 14th century. You can watch the full length video of the incredible adventures of medieval pilgrim-turned-traveller Ibn Battuta
