Sgt. Maj. John Canley will become the 300th Marine to be awarded the Medal of Honor.
President Donald J. Trump called Canley July 9 to share the news and congratulate him.
As a gunnery sergeant during the Vietnam War, Canley took command of 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, after his company commander was wounded during the Battle of Hue City. He led his Marines while saving lives and eliminating enemy threats over several days.
He was originally awarded a Navy Cross for his actions. It is being upgraded to a Medal of Honor.

3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force gasp through an eight-week Marine Corps Combatant Divers Course at Camp Schwab, Okinawa, Japan. Six instructors from the Navy Diving and Salvage Training Center, in Panama City, Florida, attempted to tear the Marines out of their comfort zone. During one portion of the training, the instructors simulated rough seas by ripping off the students goggles, cutting off their air supply, and disorienting them.
