Nigeria Flying Eagles Ready for 2023 Under 20 African Cup of Nations - Ready to face Senegal, Egypt and Mozambique
Its about time for the Under 20 Africa Cup of Nations which will be hosted by Egypt from the 19 February to 11 March 2023.
A total of 12 teams will be participating in this year’s event with countries like Egypt, Mozambique, Senegal and Nigeria making up Group A. In group B we have Uganda, Central African Republic, South Sudan and Congo. While In group C we have countries like Tunisia, Gambia, Benin and Zambia.
After 3 games, the top two teams of each group will advance to the quarter finals along with the two best 3rd placed teams. Nigeria flying eagles are the most successful team in this competition with a total of 7 trophies, followed by Ghana with 4 trophies who failed to qualify this time around.
The Nigerian team is coached by Mr Ladan Bosso who was actually the coach of the under 20 team from 2007 to 2009 when the Flying Eagles came second and third respectively at the Under 20 AFCON.
The tournament will also serve as the African qualifiers for the world cup as the top four teams will qualify for the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup to be hosted in Indonesia. Out of 17 tournament Nigeria has qualified for, we only failed twice to make it out of the group twice. Though the last time we lifted the trophy was in 2015, in 2017 we didn't qualify, in 2019, we came 4th and in 2021, we also did not qualify.

The Flying Eagles have already played some warm-up games to prepare for the tournament. They defeated Zambia U20 4-2, Congo Brazzaville 2-1, and Kawkab Athletics U23 6-1. These victories have boosted their confidence, but they know that the tournament games will be much tougher.
To qualify for the world cup, we have to get to the semifinals of this tournament, but first by qualifying out of our group either by finish top 2 or becoming one of the two best 3rd placed teams.
Scouts from top clubs will be available in this competition, and outstanding players will surely get signed by these clubs. Let’s hope the flying eagles will do well. As world cup qualification is important, I hope they make it to the semifinals at least. And maybe they go all the way to the finals to win this competition for the record 8th time. And Hopefully, some of these players might get to transition to the Under 23 side even the main super Eagles team.
As a Nigerian, I'm excited to see what this team can do, and I hope they make it to the semifinals at least.
