Episode 57: Mightier than the Sword with Brittany King
With so many great writers featured on previous interviews, UnityNow's Kimberly Kolb Eakin decided to get to the bottom of how they got so good at formulating and articulating their ideas. So this week, she sat down with Brittany King - now a teacher of writing at Indiana University, in addition to being a prolific writer herself - to do just that.
Throughout their conversation, the two explore what it means to express oneself through the written word. King talks about her journey as a writer, and the lessons she's learned from her own favorites in the field. She also shares her insight on teaching the next generation, wondering if reinvigorating the art of long-form expression, and the patience needed to practice it, can make a difference in Gen Z's struggles with mental health.
Finally, King talks about her upcoming projects, including some exciting work with the Nuance Forum, and how she plans to put her skills and talent to use in fostering better discourse and communication in a society that direly needs it.
Host Toby Davis sits down with Erec Smith, co-founder of Free Black Thought, to discuss his original path as a mild-mannered professor of rhetoric with interest in the confluence of rhetorical theory and Buddhist philosophy all the way to his time now in the fight against “The Great Awokening”. Erec tells us what key event changed his path and even caused him to alter his book at the time. The near complete shift became his 2020 book “A Critique of Anti-racism in Rhetoric and Composition”. Erec sheds light on Critical Race Theory regarding what points are based in truth and thought and which parts have been stolen and transformed. We also discuss Empowerment Theory (the helpful kind), Led Zeppelin, and Jay Cutler. Look for Erec’s co-authored new book in 2022 covering disempowerment and empowerment.

This week, UnityNow's Kimberly Eakin welcomes guest David Webb, a fellow volunteer for the
Unity2020 project, and a pivotal player in that organization's primary. While UnityNow was being born elsewhere on the team slack, Webb was working on revolutionary new ranked choice voting software to help find the first ever Unity ticket. He shares his experience on that project, from signing up for the task, to programming, testing, and presenting his work, to the chaotic, stressful, and rewarding election day.
Throughout this conversation, the two also reminisce about what brought them to Unity2020,
about what friends and family thought about the project, and about its perception in media. The two also look forward, to see what current projects are best carrying on the values of unity, and how ranked choice voting has been growing in popularity since making its national primary debut. You won't want to miss it!

This week, UnityNow’s Toby Davis sits down with Isaac Saul, editor of the Tangle political newsletter. Saul discusses his efforts to break people out of their political bubbles by covering the issues of the day through a holistic look at perspectives from left, right, and center, and an earnest effort to present the strongest arguments from each side.
Throughout this discussion, the two men explore what it means to be in a bubble, and what it takes to get out. What is it that drives the heavily partisan, often sensationalized coverage that has seemed to dominate in recent years? And what can be presented to consumers, caught up in the tribal madness, to help them open their minds to other perspectives?
The two also take a deep dive into Tangle’s breakdown of 2,000 Mules, a controversial film by Dinesh D’Souza about the 2020 election, to see what the movie got right, what it got wrong, and why, according to Tangle, it ultimately fails to offer any real substance to those outside of D’Souza’s tribe.
Finally, Saul gives his take on the future of political media. Is the age of independent media coming? Or, as Tangle’s rapidly growing readership of 35,000 might show, is it already here?

In this very special episode, Toby Davis is joined by UnityNow’s all-star, all-volunteer crew to look back at the podcast’s journey from the humble “unofficial” pod of the Unity2020 movement to what it is today. The gang shares their favorite clips from the show’s run so far, highlighting the guests and the moments that made them rethink how they look at the world, that captured and articulated the spirit of the unity movement, and that made them proud of what they’d put together. Finally, they discuss what may lie in store for the future of the podcast, and how we can work to deliver the message of unity as powerfully as possible, to as great an audience as we can reach.
