Late Dr Surinder Dalal, eminent Pest Literacy Expert from Jind , Haryana, has worked on the principle of “NO PESTICIDE, NO PEST” and strictly believe that ‘Agriculture is possible without insecticides but not without Insects’.
After the sad demise of Dr Surinder Dalal in 2013 his disciple Shri Manvir Singh Reddu from village Igra, district Jind of Haryana is spear heading the Campaign of Pest Literacy. Manbir Rehdu ,is a cotton farmer himself and doing Non-Pesticidal Management (NPM) of pests on cotton by maintaining the Natural Pest Ecology in the cotton . Manbir and his colleague farmers do not use even a single pesticide spray on cotton for killing pests. Nature completes its cycle of Vegetation (cotton) ---Herbivorous insects (i.e. commonly known as pests) ---Insectivorous insects (commonly known as friend insects). Farmers of Dr Surinder Dalal School of thought always says that No insect is farmer’s enemy and No insect is his friend. They count two type of Insects mainly – MANSAHARI – The Non-Vegetarian and SHAKAHARI – The Vegetarian insects. Vegetarian Insects come on any vegetation for fulfilling their food requirements and there is a unique thought of Dr Dalal’s School of thought that many times Plants themselves invites insects for maintaining natural balance of their development. They invite insects by secreting particular smell into the air which a biological signal.
Farmers and village women of about 30 villages of district Jind are now able to recognize more than 150 insects in cotton crop due to year’s long consistent efforts and motivation of Dr. Surinder Dalal. Now the farmers of this area don’t have any fear from insects and they don’t use any chemical pesticide to kill them rather they show patience and give chance to Nature for completing its natural cycle of cotton, then vegetarian insects eating cotton and then non-vegetarian insects eating vegetarian insects. Thus they have well proved that “NO INSECTICIDES, NO INSECTs”.
Kheti Virasat Mission has learned NPM from Centre for Sustainable Agriculture, Hyderabad in its initial years . This has laid the foundation of KVM’s understanding of Managing Pests without Pesticides. Dr Surinder Dalal has given an altogether a newer understanding and perspective on Pests and Insects. KVM team has visited Jind villages in 2011 to learn from Dr Surinder Dalal and farmers working with him. KVM has organized hundreds of Pest Literacy Workshops and Farmer’s Field Schools to propagate Ecological Pest Management.
