The Iron Boot Scrapers arose from the debris of the streets of Brighton, fully formed, as a fusion Edwardian Rock band. Humble beginnings, but ambitions of nothing less than World Domination! They perform both as an originals band and covers. An Edwardian Rock band transported to the 21st Century, The Iron Boot Scrapers meld the Music Hall of the 1930's to the Rock of today, either with their own inimitable originals tunes, or with otherwise unique covers of pop/rock tunes. Playing for private functions and also festivals/venues. Using Edwardian period instruments, they foray out into the musical establishment to create their own and unique sound. The Iron Boot Scrapers truly learnt their trade on the street. They started busking in 2000 and, due to their no-holds-bar performances, which involved accosting members of the audience and whipping the crowds into a frenzy, they found they were offered many ‘indoor’ bookings at festivals, weddings and corporate events. They have since toured in Portugal, Istanbul, Germany, Sweden, Luxembourg, Italy, Switzerland, France and Holland. In 2014 they brought out their own ‘originals’ album ‘Costermonger’ which has been successfully embraced by the worldwide ‘Steampunk’ fraternity as a true album to visualise the crossing of Victorian/Edwardian instrumentation with 21st Century rock attitude. They will perform normally as a 4 piece ensemble but can work as a trio or expand to a 6 piece ensemble; the trio being sousaphone, banjo and drums (with 2 part vocal harmonies). The quartet will add a lead instrument, such as violin, brass, accordion or guitar (3 part vocal harmonies). When playing covers at functions they rip apart the modern textures of popular rock/pop/dance tunes and put them back together with the Iron Boot Scraper flavour. Their repertoire is constantly being thought over and updated to, from the word ‘go’, get that dance floor jumpin’. All the while interacting with the crowd with their unique sense of humour and badinage. A unique international performer, Kwabana Lindsay has performed all over the world. In true circus fashion, he suspends the audience’s disbelief with his incredible talents using slack-rope, fire, stilts, acrobatics, corde lisse, aerial skills, juggling, mime, music and comedy to create an unforgettable show. Lindsay was born in Accra, Ghana where the origins of his stage name Kwabana come from and where he picked up a keen sense of African rhythm and balance. He grew up mainly in Leicester, England where he started his performing career playing Guitar, harmonica and singing on street corners of Leicester market. When a friend taught him to juggle He formed a five strong clown cooperative with a small grant from the cooperative development agency and set off for a summer tour of holiday camps in cornwall. That same year (1985) the troupe attended the National Circus Convention in Wales where he heard about a circus school in Bristol called Fool Time was about to open up. Jumping at the opportunity Lindsay studied at Fool Time and launched his solo circus career. The following year he worked for his first circus the wind and solar powered Croissant Neuf and toured with a travelling steam fair. A tour of France with some friends doing street shows followed and when returning to France a year later he joined the French company Naphthaline doing large scale outdoor theatre, lots of stilts and fireworks and a live rock band. By now he was getting known for his signature act playing the violin on the slack rope and it only seemed fitting to take the show to Ireland where he toured by bicycle towing a trailer. He studied for a while at The Desmond Jones School of Mime, London before a solo tour of Europe performing in Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, France, Spain and Portugal. He worked with Captain Bobs Circus in Bath and with them travelled through France and Spain and later Ireland and the Basque country. After a tour of Australia he joined NO Fit State Circus, Cardiff and toured a tented show with a circus adaptation of Treasure Ireland. He lived trained and taught at The Circus Space, London worked with Glynebourne Opera, Covent Garden Opera and in a production of Carmen at the Royal Albert Hall doing acrobatics, Stilts, juggling and fire dance He toured for 6 seasons with Giffords Circus, Cotswolds Kwabana performs regularly at Glastonbury Festival, The Edinburgh Fringe He is THE ONE-MAN CIRCUS. The “Fiddler on the rope” act is Kwabana’s trademark. The title says it all. “FIDDLER ON THE ROPE”: Catch your breath as Lindsay wobbles wildly and gasp with wonder at the ballerina-like antics as he balances on the rope while playing an Irish jig. CLOWNING: Lindsay draws influence from the classic silent movie greats, incorporating this with his own modern style of clowning. He combines the romantic with the ridiculous, his own recipe for fun, sprinkled with foolishness for that extra something special. MIME: A master of improvisation, audience interaction, slapstick and buffoonery, Lindsay is well versed in the international language of mime, which forms the foundation of his work. ACROBATICS: Lindsay will stand on his head for you, and that’s not just literally speaking. Enjoy watching his extraordinary feats as he performs his tumbling routine while club-swinging or juggling fire, all while playing the harmonica at the same time. STILTS: Lindsay can take on a range of personas on stilts, from traditional friendly characters that delight children to magnificent three-metre tall giant creatures dancing with fire. Brighton based Dessie Magee is an Independant, DIY, alternative, Folk, Rock Singer-Songwriter, Producer from Belfast-Brighton 'When Your Dancing, Don't Look Down'. Dessie, "hails from Belfast, Northern Ireland. Growing up Dessie found it difficult staying out of trouble and avoiding regular run-ins with the police. Eventually he began singing in the heavy music scene, a well timed saving grace and positive outlet. But, eventually this resulted in Dessie having to undergo major throat surgery, a result of which he was unable to speak for months after. Despite the injury, Dessie was determined to pursue his musical career and after a long period of rehabilitation he began learning to speak again, and eventually was able to sing again. Many people in this situation would rule out a future in music but his persistence and passion for music gave him the ambition to strive for success and begin his new journey.
