The Gospel of J. E. Mainer and The Mountaineers - With Morris Herbert - Vol.18. J. E. Mainer was one of the pioneers of early recorded country music. He was born in North Carolina in 1898, while his younger brother Wade was born in 1907. Wade lived until the age of 104 and died in 2011. Wade and J. E. Mainer are always good listening when looking for some good oldtime country music.
Joseph Emmett Mainer (July 20, 1898 – June 12, 1971) talks about growing up, working in the cotton mills and playing with his brother Wade for the Crazy Water Crystal Company-sponsored radio shows, and recording for RCA Victor, King Records and Alan Lomax.
“My daddy played a five-string banjo. He picked a little bit and he learnt me a few songs. I ain’t going to tell you what songs none of them is because I want to keep them. Old dad and me used to have a lot of fun. We had some good times.”
“…I can tell you right now I’ll never forget the one time I was about eight years old and I went to work in a cotton mill…”
“Well, I was working for the Crazy Water Crystal Company…out of Mineral Wells, Texas…”
