The German capital Berlin saw some of its heaviest clashes in years last night as protesters poured onto the streets to protest Israel's war crimes in Gaza.
Police arrested 174 Palestine solidarity protesters and violently assaulted and detained people for merely expressing their views, including children and the elderly. The aggressive policing provoked clashes with young people who erected barricades and set off fireworks.
The German government and mainstream media are framing the protests as anti-semitic rabble-rousing, as German police use the racist labelling of a "religious war" on the streets of Berlin.
The clashes mainly hit the Sonnenallee high street in the Neukölln district, known for its large Palestinian community. Since the beginning of the Al-Aqsa Flood battle on October 7, police have been constantly patrolling Sonnenallee, regularly attacking and arresting people merely for peacefully displaying support for Palestine. Palestine protests are routinely banned by German courts.
