You know, if anybody ever caught you looking at the Bible and reading it, and thinking; "I think this is just metaphorical here and not literal." People would recoil in horror, like you've just denied inspiration. The literal meaning isn't the one that we use when we think something's real, and the metaphorical meaning isn't something we use when we're denying something is real. That is not true. In the Old Testament, we have the concept of Cosmic Geography. There's this sense; well, if this is the way it is, then I can only be rightly related to the real God, the true God, Yahweh, if I'm in his land, so when I'm outside the land, that's dangerous. It's dangerous territory because it's under the dominion of some other god. And this worldview that emerges from Deuteronomy 32 is reflected in a number of passages; when Naaman comes to Israel to speak with the Prophet, to be cured of leprosy. And he is cured. And he says, "Now I know that Yahweh is the God of all gods, and I will never worship and other." He's not staying in Israel. He's never going to read Torah. He's never going to observe the Sabbath. He's not going to get circumcised. Okay, but his theology consists of one point, that is the ultimate point. Who is the true God. So what is he asked the Prophet for? Dirt! Check it out!

Biblical Cosmology does not conform to literal expectations, but it's going to communicate really important (and I would say pretty cool) ideas. In the ancient world, there was the belief that the three-tier cosmos was connected by a polar axis, which the ancients called the World Tree. Their conception was that there's this huge axis that goes all the way through the center of the earth and connects everything. It holds the cosmos together. And in biblical theology, Jerusalem was at the center of the earth. Check this out!

I would say that the key to this is Christology. And what I mean by that is, in the biblical story arc, Jesus is the linchpin: it's where Old Testament stuff leads. And it's where New Testament stuff extends. God gave us revelation so that we would understand the plan for getting what he wanted. And then the question is, well, now that we are living in a time where we're living, and we do know stuff about Jesus, on what basis do we need to know something additional, that isn't in this other thing that is completely oriented to the person of Jesus? Where is the New Testament insufficient? Check this out!

In the Baal Cycle, religious texts from Ugarit, we have a line about Baal and he's called 'the charioteer of the clouds'. Now in Ugaritic material, this was a stock description of Baal. No one in the ancient world would have thought Baal was less than deity, Baal was a deity. Baal worship was ubiquitous in the ancient world. Why is it important? Because the Old Testament writers, on five occasions, will lift this title of Baal and attributed to the God of Israel, to Yahweh. Check it out!
