?Model number: Fractal Design Ion Gold 850W
OEM: High Power
The major differences with the Platinum Ion+ line: Rifle bearing fan, lower grade capacitors on the secondary side, smaller bulk caps leading to lower hold-up time. Fewer FETs for the regulation of the +12V rail and in cable configuration the main differences are the decreased SATA and 4-pin Molex connectors, by two and one, respectively. Finally, the warranty is lower at seven years, while the Platinum Ion+ models are covered by a ten-year warranty.
? Efficiency: Cybenetics-Gold 80 PLUS Gold
? Noise: Cybenetics A- ( 25 – 30 dB[A])
? Modular: Yes (Fully)
? Dimensions: Compact (150mm depth)
? Price: $110
? Warranty: 7-years
? Power Specifications: Single +12V rail
? Power Distribution: 850W at 12V and 120W on the minor rails.
? Cables: 2x EPS, 6x PCIe on three cables, 8x SATA on two cables, 3x 4-pin Molex
? Cable Length and distance between them: Long enough cables with 155mm distance between all peripheral connectors
? In Cable caps: No
? Caps and Fan manufacturers: The electrolytic filtering caps on the secondary side are provided by Teapo and belong to its low-end SC line. The bulk caps are by Nichicon and don't have enough combined capacity to provide a longer than 17ms hold-up time.
The cooling fan has decent specifications, and if it uses a quality rifle bearing, it will manage to outlive the seven-year warranty.
? Protection Features: The OCP triggering points are correctly set on all major rails under both cold and hot operating conditions. The over-power protection works well, too, and there is over-temperature protection crucial to any PSU.
? Average Efficiency: It is not competitive, taking the lead only from the Corsair RM850x, which needs a push in this section.
? Average PF: The APFC converter performs amazingly well, achieving first place in this chart.
? Average Noise Output: It is low enough. It could be even lower, though, with some more tuning in the fan speed profile.
? Overall Performance: The Fractal Design Ion Gold 850W doesn't pose a serious threat to the top offerings in this category, but it has a notable lower price tag.
??? Bottom Line ???
The Ion Gold with 850W capacity cannot meet the performance levels of other popular products in this category, but this doesn't necessarily mean that it is a bad product. On the contrary, it offers decent performance levels for its price. Nonetheless, the more expensive competition in this category uses higher-quality parts. It offers higher performance, too, so it is totally up to you if you will prefer to spend less and get a Fractal Design Ion Gold 850W or pay more for a Corsair RM850x with the new ML fan or an XPG Core Reactor 850. We thought to replace the PS5's PSU with a power adapter, for various reasons. CWT was kind enough to make something, especially for us!
Watch the video to see if this change lowered the PS5's temperatures, and why we bothered replacing the PSU with something custom-made.

EVGA teams with Seasonic and the new G6 line continues the legacy of the G2 and G3 lines, which were made by Super Flower.
? Internal Design: The G6 line uses an updated Seasonic Focus platform featuring an MCU which, besides the firmware OPP, as EVGA calls it, also handles over temperature protection and controls the fan's speed. This is a good platform featuring a full-bridge topology and an LLC resonant converter for increased efficiency.
? Caps and Cooling Fan quality: All filtering caps are provided by Japanese manufacturers and are of good quality to outlast the long warranty. Besides electrolytic caps, many polymer caps are also used. Hong Hua provides the cooling fan, which uses a fluid dynamic bearing for lower noise output and increased reliability.
? Protection Features: This PSU is supposed to have two different OPP triggering points. Nonetheless, we only achieved to trigger one of them, most likely the one that EVGA calls hardware OPP, although we raise the load slowly during OCP and OPP evaluation. OCP is adequately set on the minor rails, but it is quite high at 12V. OPP has a high triggering point, too. Most likely, EVGA wanted to make sure that no power spike could shut down this unit.
? Bottom Line: It is nice to see EVGA back on track in the PSU market. After Super Flower and FSP, it’s Seasonic's turn to provide a platform, and the result is very good. The SuperNOVA (what a name for a PSU!) 1000 G6 is among the best products money can buy in this market segment, and its main competitor is the Corsair RM1000x which offers similar performance levels and has about the same average noise output, so it is up to you which you will prefer. A notable difference between these PSUs is that the G6 has two more PCIe connectors, while the Corsair unit is among the few that come with three EPS connectors.

The Lexar Play with 256 GB capacity is worth your attention if you are not so interested in write performance, which is not its strong point, but mostly care about read operations. You cannot call it super affordable and I would like to see at least the same write speeds with the Samsung Evo Plus that I compared it with.
