iPhone 14 and 2022 iPhone SE will DEMOLISH Android!
2022 is looking to be a great year for Apple, and not just because of all the Macs we’re expecting. iPhone is getting a MAJOR upgrade with the iPhone 14 later this year, but that’s probably not even the most important iPhone coming this year… Lets talks SE. And then we’ll talk 14 later in the video.
iPhone SE over the past few weeks though has become way more interesting than we expected. Its the same body we have in the iPhone SE 2, with the 4.7” LCD Panel and a chassis that basically dates back to the iPhone 8 that was released alongside the iPhone 10 in 2017… which is also pretty damn close to the iPhone 6! So the look of this phone is nothing to write home about. But when the iPhone SE2 came out with A13 inside at $399, it was probably the best value phone on the market. Well, this year we get that same body but with A15 and 5G technology added to the list. Probably at about the same $399 price tag, so what’s the huge deal here?
But the price itself is what is so compelling, as rumour has it that 2nd generation iPhone SE could well be as low as $199. Just let that sink in.
$199 is the current price of the iPod touch, which presumably would be discontinued if that’s what’s happening. And the A13 is not exactly outdated, it was just released in the iPad base model too in 2021. The Apple TV released in the same year contains the A12. A13 is still faster in almost every metric that the fastest Qualcomm snapdragon chips. So, this very base level iPhone SE, for less than $200 could be an absolute game changer for Apple in terms of emerging markets.
Now an iPhone is a legitimate option as a second handset for far more people. A $200 iPhone will massively increase Apple’s install base if it actually happens, and even if it was to be dropped to $300 or $250, there’s going to be far more people who this is opened up to.
iPhone 14 is looking to get another major redesign, and I’m here for it. While everyone referenced the iPhone 4 when iPhone 12 with it’s squared off sides was released, it was really closer to the iPhone 5, with the display and rear panels flush with the frame, while the iPhone 4 was a full glass sandwich with the panels sitting above the frame, and that looks to be coming with the 14 too. Of course, inside will be the A16 SOC, likely to be manufactured by TSMC as usual but on a 4nm process, which if Apple did nothing else but change the node size would be around 20% more efficient. Along with the new SOC one of the most annoying things about iPhone right now will be fixed. The wobble. It looks like the new design will be noticeably thicker than the 12 or 13, but this extra girth will allow the camera lenses to finally be flush with the back surface once aga

Is Apple killing Facebook?
Microsoft thinks Apple is out of control
Will a port-less iPhone lead to cheaper AirPods
And Marcin Kowalczyk’s setup showcase
Meta’s stock yesterday dropped nearly 20% yesterday, wiping nearly 180 Billion dollars from their company value when they were around 3 billion behind the market’s revenue expectations… And its all Apple’s fault, obviously.
Meta is of course the new name for Facebook’s group of companies including instagram, WhatsApp and the VR platform formerly known as Oculus.
Facebook has pointed the finger directly at Apple, saying the privacy controls implemented in iOS have materially reduced their ad revenues and caused their profits to fall compared to their expectations.
What Apple has actually done is require Facebook to ask if they want to track users outside the App - and yes, as expected, many users don’t really fancy that.
Facebook then went on to say that Apple is simply favouring Google as the Chrome browser is far more easy to track users through, and as Google currently pays Apple to be their default search engine on iPhone and iPad, that Apple is simply putting the boot in at Facebook to help their Google friends. Not of course, acknowledging that Google also produce the only viable competitor to iOS in Android.
What Facebook didn’t mention as prominently was that their daily active users were also down for the first time ever. Not by a huge margin, but a significant one. From personal experience, I’d say I spend far, far less time on Facebook than I have in the past, maybe 10% of what I did at its peak, and I wonder if others who used to spend a lot of time there are actually just checking in briefly instead of spending time there now. Of course it’s much easier to blame Tim Cook for being mean.
But what could Facebook do? Well the one thing that springs to mind for me is de-emphasising their mobile app and encouraging people to visit in the browser. This seems counter intuitive, except that tracking is far easier there, at least for now. And just like Apple is gently nudging intel Mac users towards Apple Silicon with features that are exclusive to M1 in MacOS each year, Facebook may well offer some experiences that work in the browser, and specifically Chrome over their native app or safari. This is my speculation, but I just wanted to get it out there because if I was Facebook, and to be clear, I don’t want to be, that’s probably what I’d do.
Have you used Facebook in the past and found your usage waining? Are you as committed as ever, or do you steer clear of all the Zuckerberg flavoured apps? Let me know in the comments.

In yesterday’s show I mentioned that there were rumours of a touchID equipped iPad Air in an iPad Pro 11 inch body, but potentially with the TouchID sensor under the display, which I said I thought was unlikely. It turns out that the leaked image actually shows a redesigned sleep/wake (or power) button, and its believed that may house the Touch ID sensor.
If true, I’m not 100% sure what I think of the idea. The iPad Pro chassis is certainly a nicer form factor, but I’m not sure how intuitive reaching for the power button is especially when the body is almost featureless on the face, so knowing which end to aim for will be about as intuitive as the infamous Apple TV Remote.
But for what will likely be a $500 device that’ll be compatible with Apple Pencil 2, the Magic Keyboard & trackpad and equipped with USB-C, can you put up with a Touch ID biometric? Let me know in the comments.
Epic Fail Updates
Because is it even an Apple News show without Fortnite? In a preliminary hearing, the judge has come down right in the middle between Epic and Apple. Apple doesn’t have to let Fortnite back in the App Store, but Epic will keep access to its developer accounts, allowing them to maintain and update the Unreal engine.
That’s handy as a lot of other developers use the engine to power their own gaming apps and more, and the judge did state that Apple & Epic were free to litigate one another, but that innocent bystanders, meaning other developers should not suffer the consequences.
iPhone 12 won’t have a charger?
More evidence that iPhone 12 won’t include a charger block or EarPods
We mentioned a couple of days ago that the 5G chips in Apple’s upcoming iPhones 12 & 12 Pro were adding a significant amount to the price of the devices, and that Apple was using simpler, lower capacity battery tech in the iPhone 12 line in order to offset some of that cost.
While it’s not new news, multiple sources are pointing to iPhone 12 shipping without a charging brick and EarPod headphones. Of course, hardly anyone doesn’t have a charging block at this point, and more and more people are moving to wireless audio, but rest assured, you’ll still get a charging cable in the box with your iPhone.
Apple will probably address this as being far more efficient to ship in the new smaller packaging as well as drastically reducing e-waste, but that little cost saving sounds pretty handy for Apple too.

0:53 Jon Prosser has released his renders of Apple’s upcoming Mac mini and as we’d expected, it can certainly get smaller, and thats exactly what we’re seeing here.
The design, as previously suggested by Luke Miani seems to have a similar footprint but about half the height of the current version, and the iPhone 12 design language comes through again here with very flat sides leading up to a top panel that is inset with the aluminium surrounding. Apparently that top panel is some form of polycarbonate, which also feels like a retro call back to the first ever Mac mini, which had a smaller footprint and was a little taller than the current generation.
This is most likely to be the one for the M1X models initially so other than having the thermal headroom, this also has more IO than the M1 model too. 4 USB-C ports, though its not clear if these are thunderbolt, basic usb or a combination. Also 2 USB-A ports, HDMI, Ethernet and headphone jack. The Mac mini also appears to have the same magnetic power supply port as the 24” 2021 iMac, suggesting that the Mac mini’s power supply will be external too just like the iMacs. This does make sense in terms of thermal management.
2:07 Next up, several reports are suggesting that iOS 15 could include food tracking as a part of health features on the phone. Now there are multiple apps that do this already and integrate with health, but there are a couple of reasons this makes sense. First, those emoji I mentioned yesterday from the WWDC teaser… Eat Sleep Code. But Maybe that Eat section is actually referring to that new feature too. Now this also ties into the possibility of Apple Watch getting Blood Glucose monitoring too, though I’m pretty sure it won’t be medically rated for treatment of conditions like Diabetes, though there is still very useful things it could do.
3:35 And next - Apple Silicon Mac Pros - I’ve talked in the past about how Apple would in my opinion be most likely to use multiple SOCs to get up to the levels of performance required - and the latest leaks suggest I’m right I think.
Look at the core counts and you may be able to see what I mean. M1 as we know consists of 4 IceStorm efficiency cores, 4 Firestorm performance cores and an 8 Core GPU. According to the latest rumours, M1X will feature 2 efficiency cores and 8 performance cores, with a 16 or 32 Core GPU based on your needs.
But the rumours from Mark Gurman suggest that the Mac Pro will have 20 or 40 cores, the first with 16 firestorm and 4 IceStorm cores and the second with 32 Firestorm and 8 IceStorm cores. Those numbers tie up perfe

Apple TV is now free until July!
When Apple TV Plus was launched in November 2019, if you bought an eligible Apple device, the service was free for a full 12 months. Then, Apple extended that to the end of January 2021, which was presumed to be due to the current situation delays to the second seasons of their returning shows.
Now it seems that July will be the time that you’ll need to pay up, suggesting that there have been even more delays.
My personal thought is that Apple is interested in the MGM back catalogue - there had been rumours that they were looking to buy the rights to the latest James Bond movie, No Time to Die, and MGM holds the keys to the back catalogue of previous James Bond films. Currently it looks like the studio would cost around 4bn, with Netflix a front runner - but Apple could really use a bolstered selection for Apple TV plus. Now we just need that shiny new Apple TV box to watch all this great stuff on, we’ve been waiting FOREVER!
What would be your thoughts on Apple buying and perhaps becoming a full fledged movie production studio? Let me know in the comments.
Next iPhone Pro models could get vapour chamber cooling - but what even is that?
Vapour chambers are a fairly high end cooling solution for moving heat away from high powered processors - which makes me wonder how hard Apple is planning to push the A15 System on a chip in the 2021 iPhones. I say 2021 iPhones as it could be the iPhone 13, iPhone 12S, or something completely different according to the various rumours circulating online. Could we see it just being called iPhone 2021?
Its a far more efficient way to cool a processor or SOC, but if Apple thinks it will be needed in 2021’s iPhones it suggests they’re likely to be creating more heat. This may be because the A15 will still be built on a 5nm process by TSMC, meaning the efficiency gains will likely be less and clock speeds may be going up for the extra performance needed. Alternatively, It could also be the use of more cores, right now the A14 is 6 core, with 4 efficiency IceStorm cores and 2 high performance FireStorm cores on board. So we could be looking at faster Firestorm cores, or possibly more of them, or more graphics cores.
New iMacs & Mac Pro too
First, iMac. It looks very likely that the iMac will get its redesign this year along with its switch to Apple Silicon inside, presumably the M1X that is also expected in the 14 & 16” MacBook Pro redesign.
Beyond that, the earlier leaks in MacOS 11 Big Sur that showed Mac support for FaceID suggests something will have it, and a desktop without size or weight constraints seems like a pretty great first candidate. It makes more sense in the iMac than MacBooks for a couple of reasons, first,
