How Adventure Changed the Ringbearers | Hobbit Day 2021
Bilbo, Frodo, and Sam all changed radically due to their adventures, and in ways that strangely mirror each other. In this video I explore how their adventures changed them—the good, the bad, and the rest.
The Kingdom of Gondor has a long, complicated history with some major disasters. Here's a thumbnail sketch of the downhill slide from the days of Isildur to the renewal begun by Aragorn.
Correction: I mention the Witch King feared Earnur when in fact this is said of Boromir I, an earlier steward of Gondor who was compared to Earnur.

There are a bunch of father figures in Tolkien's fiction, and we can see a few themes common to most of them.

Middle-earth is a realm of high fantasy, so there’s lots of magic and Medieval-style technology, but there are hints of more advanced technology as well….

As a young reader my brain quite naturally correlated Aman, west of Middle-earth (Europe) with America, though I was aware that was not really Tolkien’s intent. Imagine my surprise to find out he almost went there himself….

A viewer asked about how Tolkien came up with Ents, and it’s actually a great example of one of his most-used creative tools.

Magic is just one element of Tolkien's world that puts it squarely in the realm of fantasy, but it's not a clearly defined magic system. I discuss Tolkien's use of magic and his thoughts on the topic in this video.

Before Peter Jackson's epic trilogy, there was Lord of the Rings the musical, aka the Rankin Bass animated version of The Return of the King. How does it hold up?
