I barely remember this song, didn't even know the changes, and that's how I like it! Go into jams with ZERO preconceived notions or ideas about how it goes, and just WING IT. Play what you feel, and NEVER COPY. I got one tip from a woman at 42:40. One tip in 50 minutes. Just shows you, even jamming from what is universally acclaimed as the greatest jazz album ever made, elicits almost zero response from the public, even when it's soothing, quiet, and mellow. This was my last day busking before going on a well deserved vacation on Sept 10 after 7 months straight of five hour days. It might be my last day outside for the year. Like Flashdance, 'What a feeling!' it was. I finally got some back up against the zombie apocalypse. I thought I was the last human on earth. This woman exhibited strange alien tendencies of 'emotion', 'spontaneity' and 'dancing'. It was obvious she had not been turned into a plant yet. It was a shock for me to see someone reacting to music. Praise be! I had to take my heart medicine. I checked my watch. Of course, a rift in time had sent me back to 1967 like Austin Powers. Groovy, man! I think I'll stay here!

1) Street playing is not all fun and games and dancing kids. Doing this for 7 years. I regularly face not only verbal abuse, but physical assault as I work a few blocks from downtown eastside Vancouver. I'm surrounded by addicts, drunks, and people who should be in mental homes.
2) I'm unemployed. All live music including busking, is banned. I lost all work last year and received ZERO compensation. I had a very bad year in 2020 and only recently came out of a depression.
3) I make ZERO from youtube no matter how many views I get. I was demonetized by Google years ago as part of their culling of small accounts. Class action lawsuit was initiated. I don't run ads. And more importantly, even if I did, most of my videos are instantly copyrighted and auto monetized by record labels because they are COVERS. If you see an ad, it's the record label collecting. 4) I'm a musician that writes his own music for 20 years. Check out my bandcamp page to see what I can really do with a guitar. 500 albums of original instrumentals.

6) I get asked this 100 times a day so here's the answer: I play on the street and not in a band because all the clubs closed years ago. I used to lead many bands from 2006 to 2018. That's all gone. It's also a lot more hassle, and less money, to run a band than play by myself.

I'm going to start sharing some my guitar philosophy I've learned after 48 years of playing.
Improv is easy when you have a good loop. This is a killer bass line and fun to play with. Improvisation is the most important ability you can develop as a musician. If you're not improvising, you're only copying others and there's ZERO point to that unless you are being paid very well in a cover band or orchestra, and let's face it, the chances of that are very rare these days. Music is about personal expression. It's not a competition. Developing your own style, as quickly as possible, is essential, and nothing works better than finding some music that moves you, and playing around with it like a canvas. Don't worry about mistakes, (this only adds to the flavor), stop following scales and cliche patterns, and think outside the box. Do not rehearse, ever! Stop using a pick. Nothing brings on 'your own style' faster than dropping a pick. There is reason why Mark Knopfler and Jeff Beck are easy to recognize. They do not use picks. Stop alternate picking exercises. Work on using the thumb and fingers and see how fast you can change tone by the change of pressure.
Empty your mind. Trying to remember how to play cover songs puts you at a disadvantage, as it limits your own growth. The idea is to start playing without any idea what you will play and PLAY in the moment. You can can capture some very special moments this way that you will not get with practice or planning. It's fun to create studio tracks and work out parts for a week, but that is a different process.
Put notes where they should not go. You'll be surprised what you can get out of that. Music is all about counterpoint and tension. Don't play on the one. Play on the two, or the three. Mix it up. Experiment. Let your feelings override your brain. Don't overplay. Forget about speed. No one cares. One carefully placed note is worth more than Malmsteen's entire career. Breathe. Play a few lines, take a break. Do not panic when there is space to fill. The sign of amateurs is their constant need to prove themselves by filling every bar with as many notes as possible.
I'm a bit embarrassed to put up such a wimpy 6 minute improv session but I did a series of 7 jams last night, one after another for variety, so you'll be happy to know my entire jam was almost 2 hours as usual. The rest will be posted shortly. This is part of an entire album I will be putting up on bandcamp.

June 23/23 It was busy with buskers everywhere yesterday. Went to waterfront and saw this guy playing xylophone, so I went back to the art gallery. This spot was taken over by an indigenous protest display for TWO YEARS! They finally put a stop to it after MANY complaints from city residents. Seriously, this spot has a protest on it every weekend, and they let that one protest take over the city for two years. Ridiculous. I played there once during the protest and had an ahole that lived on the site in a teepee, actually come over and turn off my amp in the middle of a solo with an audience watching. Absolutely disgusting. All buskers stopped going there. I never went back until today.
So how did it go? Other than the kid dancing at 2:14, it was an absolute failure. I made $2 for this 35 minute mellow summer jam, and $10 after two hours, half of that from one guy who recognized me from youtube. A new record low! Lol! And this is prime location where all the incentives to make money are happening. No traffic, relaxed, food truck, seating areas, and I'm playing summer time music. MAKES NO DIFFERENCE to Vancouver zombies.
To make matters worse, my go pro kept shutting off from the heat, the clip broke on my battery holder for the go pro, and then my ipad shut off. I said 'F...k it, I'm out of here." I won't be going back. People sitting behind me the entire time, eating, talking, listening. No tips. One woman said 'Sounds amazing' sat behind me for an hour. She didn't tip either. Here's a tip! 'Sounds amazing' doesn't pay the bills. Tips pay the bills. What do these people think? I'm paid by the city to stand there? It's obvious I have a guitar bag in front of me with a tip jar on it. QR code sign says "LEAVE A TIP!" The apathy in this city continues to amaze me. This is downtown central, thousands of people walking by in a location where you can actually SIT on the steps and eat, because there is a food truck right in front of me. Lunatics walking through here as well, but not as dense as waterfront. Many comments always say "To make tips, you need to try a better spot that is more relaxed, with foot traffic, cafes, outdoor seating, no sirens." Here it is! Worst day of the year.
