Using Neurofeedback to Combat Chronic Stress and Anxiety
Neurofeedback is not just about fixing problems or dysregulations but can also be used to help an individual reach optimal performance. The way we spend our time and the things we think about have a strong influence on the patterns in our brains. Anxiety and stress are normal human emotions but are not meant to run our lives. We should be able to feel stressed or anxious and then shut that feeling off when the threat or stressor has passed. In a chronic stress situation, these responses are never shutting off and cause long-term damage to our brains and bodies. You can do a few things to change these patterns, but I think neurofeedback is one of the most incredible tools out there. If you can see what’s going on in your brain then you can change it. With neurofeedback, we can literally train our brains!
In this episode I talk about paying attention to developmental milestones and what these milestones can tell us about our kids. I also dive into the use of screen time, the way it physically changes kids’ brains, and how those changes affect our kids in the long term. I also talk about movement patterns and why things like learning to crawl and learning to walk are not just physical milestones – they’re also important for a healthy brain – and if your child is doing these things atypically, it can actually lead to faulty wiring in their brains. But don’t worry – the earlier we catch these things, the easier they are to fix.

Today’s episode is the last one in our case study series. My hope is that this series has helped you see places in your own child’s life where a behaviour might actually be caused by a brain that didn’t get wired up correctly because the good news is that you can retrain a brain! I want parents to know that there are people like me who really focus on development and help children (and adults!) navigate the path to get things back on track!
Today I will be focusing specifically on chronic stress and the stress-response evaluation. I started using this evaluation in 2008 as a way to quantify stress in an individual and see how the system is actually working. In this episode I go through the stress-response evaluation in detail, explaining how it works and what it can tell me and I talk about how chronic stress literally changes the brain.

Today I share with you how a child’s perception of the world and of their parents or caregivers is what wires up their brain. I discuss how early childhood stress and experiences can lead to issues in self regulation, endurance, auditory processing, vision, reflex integration, communication, dyslexia, ADD, ADHD, social and behavior issues, and learning outcomes. I examine a stress test response in a pediatric patient, the Moro reflex, developmental milestones, and brain organization. With more education about how stress affects your child’s development you will be able to help them make adaptations and improve their learning, behavior, and brain health.

Today we are going to look at how stimulant medications actually work, things to consider when stopping or starting stimulant medications, and how too much screen usage is actually linked to symptoms of ADHD in children and teens.
The number of kids being diagnosed with some form of attention issue is growing every year. I believe that parents have the right to make decisions for their kids, but I believe that those decisions need to be informed by research and facts that many parents are not aware of. It is your job as a parent to research and learn so that you can make the best decisions for your child. My hope is that this podcast will be a helpful and encouraging starting point for you.

Working on your nutrition is definitely a job. It’s hard, and it can be incredibly overwhelming. I’m hoping that our time together will make nutrition easier to understand. Today we are focusing on the mechanical aspects of nutrition, or how the brain and body get wired up together to produce energy from the foods you eat. I look at the Energy Pathway and the Citric Acid Cycle in order to understand how your body produces energy from the foods we eat. I talk about the connection our nutrition has on diagnoses, diseases, and conditions in children and adults. Finally we discuss personalizing supplements and lab work to help us make better nutrition choices in order to get healthy down to the cellular level.

Have you ever noticed that your child has certain behaviours that escalate and then seem to calm down again only to reappear a time later? Why does this happen? You might be surprised to learn that the answer lies in your gut (and immune system). Our guts are full of good bacteria, but if we aren’t taking good care of our guts then these good bacteria can be taken over by bad bacteria. And, surprise surprise, our gut health is closely linked to our brain function!
It’s extremely important to understand the connection between our children’s open windows of development and their brain function.

I talk about learning challenges in a more general sense and focus on cognitive flexibility, motivation, and how the lockdowns of 2020 are still affecting our kids today, much more than you might think. Although I’m sure many of us would rather forget the events of 2020 and the years following, we need to realize that these events changed our kids. Sure, the labels and diagnoses that we talked about in the past few episodes existed before the pandemic started, but these diagnoses are continuing to climb and we would be naive to think that the effects of the lockdowns on our kids are all in the past. This episode will have a strong focus on the far-reaching influence of the 2020 lockdowns, but I also talk about how motivation develops, how technologys is deeply influencing our children’s brains and behaviours, and where to start if you see your child struggling in school.

For the next few episodes, I’m going to be teaching you all about reflexes. If you’ve listened to any of my previous episodes, you’ve almost certainly heard me talk about some of these reflexes before. That’s because they are such an essential part of child development. However, if these reflexes don’t properly integrate, they can cause real problems for both children and adults. In this series, I’ll be covering three different types of reflexes.
In today’s episode, we’re going to be looking at withdrawal reflexes. I talk about what exactly a withdrawal reflex is, why it’s important, and what happens if it doesn’t properly integrate. If the withdrawal reflex has been retained, it will change the whole way an individual perceives their world. This reflex is actually the beginning of how you interpret safety.

Today I have a special guest with me, a friend and colleague of mine, Dr. Jerome Lubbe from Thrive Human Care. Dr. Jerome has an incredible story and I was honoured to hear him share it. This is what actually led Dr. Jerome into the field of chiropractors and his main focus is complex and unresolved cases.
In addition to sharing his story, Dr. Jerome shared some of the additional consequences of brain injuries that people might not think about – psychological, cognitive, relational, mental, and emotional consequences. He also shared his thoughts on rest and fatigue. Dr. Jerome knows firsthand the importance of being fully rested and ensuring that our lifestyles are sustainable for our health. It turns out that fatigue shows up in the body in many different ways and can sometimes manifest as anxiety, depression, or other mental health problems.
